What would Thomas Jefferson Say

Ken Hughes
I went back and reread the Declaration of Independence, I wanted to see how far we’ve strayed from the original reasons this country split from England to from a new nation with new rules and new rights for its citizens.

What would Thomas Jefferson say, what would the pundits say he said?

We no longer have the government the founding fathers spent years crafting. This nation wasn’t formed in a day a week or a month. It took the better part of 18 years from the day the first patriot was killed in Boston to the day the constitution was ratified by all 13 colonies. The men who created and wrote the documents that finalized the formation of the United States of America were perhaps the most brilliant God ever assembled in one group at one time on this earth.

When asked what the New Congress had give them Benjamin Franklin replied “A nation if you can keep it” those words should be a warning to today’s politicians.

Partisan Politics is dividing this nation right down the center. Congress argues over trivial things that have no relevance to the important issues of the day. Washington DC has evolved into hypothetical fenced in island within the 50 states that has no concept of life outside that enclave. The residence of Washington DC pictures themselves as the aristocracy of America. The Executive Branch, The Judicial Branch, Congress, Bureaucrats, The Media, Lobbyists all put themselves above the voice of the people. It’s time for the people’s voices to be heard. It’s time the people made Washingtonians the Surfs and not the Lords of the Nation.

How soon they forget they were once one of us. There’s an addiction to power tat takes hold once they’ve been assigned a desk. Ask any Washingtonian and they’ll tell you because of the unique circumstances there’re different rules that apply to them.

I have some pet peeves, first the Medias insistence they can report anything with impunity but when it comes time to hold them accountable the peoples right to know doesn’t include their sources.

I just took an online political interrogation, it asked me what I thought then told me what I should think with multiple choice answers, they weren’t my questions they weren’t my answers. That seems to be the new standard for national political connection with the voters let the experts think and speak and manipulate the voter’s opinions.

Politicians who fabricate false allegations about their opponents then when they get caught they insist they were quoted out of context.

Laws and regulations supposedly are enacted to help the public when in reality they do more harm than good and frequently enrich some politician’s and their friends.

What I detest most is the total disregard Washingtonians have for the intelligence of those outside the beltway. What also bothers me is the public allows politicians to manipulate them like a Country Preacher would at a Holy Roller Tent Revival.

Wake up voters this is your election not theirs, hold every candidate accountable. Demand the facts of what they intend to do not what they’ve dug up on their opponents. Find ways to give candidates advice and make sure your voice is heard.

I doubt 4,500 Revolutionary Soldiers would think this government that’s evolved in the 21st century was worth sacrificing their lives for.

I have a copy of the US Constitution 6 ¾ X 4 ¾ hard cover printed by Applewood Books, It’s the same constitutional references the majority of Congress carries with them and frequently refer to for guidance. My constitution tells what the three branches of government can’t do and very little of what they can do. The founding father feared a misuse of power by elected politicians more than they feared misconduct by the public.

The Constitution vested the majority of regulatory powers in state governments. With the advent of literally hundreds of Rail Roads Congress used the Rail Roads greed and corruption as an excuse to regulate their policies and pricing on a national scale and created the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887. All government good deeds grow legs. ICC becomes the vehicle every rule and law congress wanted to snatch from the states they hung from ICC like ornaments on a Christmas tree. It’s become commonplace and there’s no longer a need for subterfuge. Congress rides roughshod over states rights and the public accepts it as the law of the land.

Congressional greed and corruption isn’t new it tracks back to the first Congress and every succeeding congress after. Every two years there’s a national election to reaffirm or select new members of the House of Representatives along with a portion of the Senate. Usually but not always the candidates are aliened with one of the two political parties. It’s become commonplace to select one of the parties as the dominant authority of congress. That’s an archaic tradition that should be changed. New criteria of one man / woman one vote should be adapted. The good old boy go along to get along should be scrapped. If the right candidates were selected it could, should and would be workable. We need men and women of good character and honest values serving in congress and to eliminate the greed and corruption they should be limited to 12 years maximum service.

Idealistic yes, possible yes, will it ever happen no.

With all our idiosyncrasies we are still the greatest nation on earth, Yes.
