By: Richard Morris
Your business has just been robbed. Money has been stolen, employees are shaken, but thanks to your policy on procedures taught to your staff during a robbery your staff is unharmed. Are you prepared for an event like this? Have your employees been trained on procedures to be taken immediately after a robbery has occurred. Hopefully you will never have to experience an event like this but being prepared could lead to a quick apprehension of the criminals and your product or money.
Training your employees on the procedures you want followed after a robbery is the key aspect of implementing a policy on what to do after a robbery. These 9 tips will help you get started.
1. Contact the police immediately, even if the alarm has been activated. This number should be posted in a place that employees have ready access to.
2. Close the business and lock all the doors.
3. Do not discuss the details of the robbery with witnesses or fellow employees. Wait for the police.
4. Immediately take notes on exactly what happened with as much detail as possible. Try and recall the appearance, speech and physical characteristics.
5. Block off all areas that the robber may have been. Donīt touch anything that the robber has touched.
6. Meet the police outside so they know that the robber has left and you are safe.
7. Ask any witnesses to stay until the police arrive. If they canīt, get their names, phone numbers and addresses.
8. Let the police handle the media. Any questions or details of the robbery should be left to them.
9. Do not discuss the amount of money or product stolen with anyone other than the police.
10. Have the employee contact you as soon as possible.
11. Surveillance camera footage can be reviewed to help police with their investigation, let your employees know if it is permissible to show the police the footage or to wait until you get there.
Conducting a mock robbery and the procedures you want followed after the robbery is a good practice to get your staff involved.
