Legacy of Aberhart Lake
Last summer, Alberta residents Albert and Marilyn opened their hearts and their home, for the second year in a row, to approximately 63 children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. For Albert, who was born and raised on the homestead, the dream of building a legacy and leaving it to his children began taking shape sixteen years ago. He, along with his wife and the help of some very like-hearted friends, began clearing a piece of land on which they were to build their own little paradise. That initial dream became an incredible network of winding, wooded trails which centre upon a five acre lake, aptly named 'Aberhart Lake' in recognition of those who built it.
Once Albert heard about the need for such a place for the Make-A-Wish children to use, he readily offered Aberhart Lake and it is slated to become a yearly affair which he and his wife look forward to hosting. The July event was opened by newly appointed president of the Northern Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Bob Winterford, who gave a warm welcome and spoke briefly about the Foundation itself. Front and centre of the day long activities, were RUMWAL Adventures; namely Lawrence Gibson and Murray Hanchard; who not only were in charge of meal preparation for the entire day, but also busied themselves by helping children bait their lines and in many cases, catch their first fish; pictures of which can be seen at www.wishforfish.photosite.com.
