Classic Championship Wrestling Event Wrap-Up 10.10.06
Dynamite Derrick opened live action by making his way to the ring for one-on-one action with Matt Maverick, a match offering interesting possibilities, as the two men used to team together on a regular basis. This, of course, was long before the recent change of heart Derrick underwent, and with the uncertainty in the back of his mind as to who his opponent is in the inaugural CCW Heavyweight Title Match, things may have seemed ripe for an upset by the quickly rising Maverick, who looked as though he was favoring his left knee just a bit stepping into action tonight.
The match opened with Derrick showing his experience on Maverick, trying to get inside his opponent's head. Having had enough, Maverick took to his own offense, before Derrick righted the ship to gain control. Through playing games at this point, "The Old School Player" aimed all of his assault on the aforementioned knee of Maverick. A single leg crab (employing lots of rope for leverage) nearly gave Derrick the match early. While Maverick was able to pull back withing shouting distance, a Supa Playa Kick left Maverick facing a frog splash. Derrick would think twice, however, as Miss Holly Wood appeared ringside, drawing his attention away from the match. As they discussed whatever was on each other's minds, a quick thinking Maverick was waiting with a schoolboy for the pin and unquestionably his biggest singles win to date in CCW.
The second match featured a triple threat that had every bit of potential to break down into a brawl from the word "go" as Elmore Fudd (accompanied by Mrs. Elma Fudd) found himself squaring off with "Convict" Rocco Andretti (seconded by the ever-present Tim the Baker) and the big man from Detroit, The Regulator. While Regulator and Andretti may have failed to find tag team success teaming together, both were more than willing to show the other that in the end, it's all business. However, Rocco and Fudd were thinking along the same lines, as the two attempted to eliminate Regulator as a factor right off the bat, a sound strategy that seemed to only have one flaw: the "teamwork" at times of Fudd and Rocco. The two fell victim to quickly mistimed collisions created by Regulator, who fought valiantly at times in the face of handicap match odds. After disposing of The Regulator to the outside, Fudd took out his frustrations on Rocco, although Regulator would nearly score the pin. The match would end rather unexpectedly as Fudd was ready to put Rocco away, but in the process of arguing with the crowd, Regulator snuck in under the radar and snagged the three count on Rocco himself to pick up the win, shocking Fudd, who looked as though he didn't know what hit him. It was a surprising lapse in judgement for Fudd, who will definitely be taking a look at this tape over the course of the week.
"Smooth" Johnny Spade then hit the ringside area, to the delight of the crowd. While Spade is still suffering bruised ribs as a result of the attack by no less than seven men after last week's Main Event, he made it clear he was ready to go to the Finals to face Dynamite Derrick for the CCW Championship, no matter what his condition. That would bring out Dynamite Derrick, already in street clothes, no doubt just hanging around to "scout" the Semi-Final match between Spade and The Prophet. As Spade made his feelings about next week perfectly clear, Derrick took it all in stride, ominously assuring Spade that he would not interfere in the Main Event later on. Somehow, I'm not sure Spade or the fans were buying it.
The mid-card featured Apollo of The HNIC in singles action against Kliff Hanger. "The Black Redneck" may be taking things back to the drawing board after a devastating loss to Dynamite Derrick in the CCW Title tournament Semi Finals, and if he is, no tougher opponent could have been picked than the powerhouse from the HNIC. The beginning of the match was a little slow, as Apollo resorted to his usual tricks to try and control the tempo against the oft-unpredictable Kliff Hanger. Kliff was ready for a fight, and that was what he brought full steam ahead to Apollo, who fell victim to several near-falls.
Catching Kliff on the way back in following a chase, it was Apollo's turn to dish out the beating. Several falls of his own left Kliff Hanger on the floor, hanging on to barely beat the ref's ten count. While Apollo put the breaks on a comeback, a missed fist drop from the middle rope ignited a spark in Kliff Hanger once again. As the match wore on, both men were pulling out all the stops to gain the advantage, and with a little help from the ropes during a pin reversal, Apollo once again got to leave Portland with a victory, the only thing that makes him happier about leaving Portland, to listen to him on the microphone...backstage...in the parking lot...For Kliff Hanger, visibly frustrated after taking the short end of the paycheck for the second straight week, is no doubt taking a second look at that drawing board.
Action resumed from the intermission with The Brute Squad looking to keep their hot streak rolling yet another week. Jebidiah Blackhawk, who fell victim to that hot streak last week, definitely had payback on his plate, teaming with the impressive young rookie Brandon Scott to attempt to take Ricky Stonewall's powerful new stable down a notch.
It was Randy Royal starting out against Brandon Scott. While K-Lo and Royal may have been in a joking mood entering the ring, they immediately went on the clock with the CCW prospect. Whether it was their momentum or the far-superior numbers game they were enjoying, with Ricky Stonewall and Guido Andretti at ringside, The Brute Squad looked like the team to beat once again this week. Scott would mount a furious comeback, only to fall prey once again to the experience factor before escaping to tag in Blackhawk. Scott, who benefited greatly from a high-profile series of matches during the summer, can only go up as he continues to show progress with on-the-fly training from veterans like Jebidiah Blackhawk.
Regaining the advantage, The Brute Squad focused on Scott, looking to grind down the first-year pro with stiff forearms shots and submission holds. Struggling from a rear chinlock, Scott tried to rally the crowd behind him. A reversal on a suplex would leave Scott and K-Lo both fighting to make it back to their corners. As Jebidiah Blackhawk entered the action, he was a house on fire, disassembling The Brute Squad until Stonewall and Andretti had seen enough, with Guido storming the ring and attacking Blackhawk, drawing the disqualification for his teammates, but leading the charge on a moral victory as they would dish out a beatdown to both men.
The main event this week featured the final Semi Final match of the CCW Heavyweight Championship tournament, with the winner going to face Dynamite Derrick next Tuesday, October 17, to crown an inaugural titleholder. The Prophet emerged first, in full war paint and headdress, looking to make the final step to a CCW Title match at the expense of a softened-up "Smooth" Johnny Spade, escorted once again by the gorgeous Miss Holly Wood. Shortly before the match would begin, however, Dynamite Derrick would take a ringside seat right near my position in the press box, strictly to "scout" the match.
As both men felt each other out at the onset, it was clear Spade was favoring his ribs, but playing through it, trying to keep Prophet off-balance by mixing ground holds with impact moves, including a huge cross-body block from the top that had to hurt Spade as much as it did Prophet, and nearly brought the match to a quick end as well. After some brief action outside the ring, Spade went back to the ground before Prophet stopped him dead in his tracks with an inverted stunner. The momentum was now in Prophet's favor.
As Prophet pushed the rules to the limit trying to put Spade away, Derrick was reclined, maintaining interest but trying not to look too interested in the match. No doubt Derrick's strategy, which has been successful up to the Finals, can only be going through fine tuning as he noted every moment in the match silently to himself.
As Prophet and Spade continued to battle, the edge swung back and forth between the two. Miss Holly Wood almost found herself in peril on more than one occasion, as he has shown no problem in physically taking her out of commission, if necessary. The brawling pace of the match kept the house in the grey area between on their seats and out of their seats, as Prophet grew more and more frustrated and determined to put Spade away for good. Spade would find his second wind, once again taking Prophet corner-to-corner before meeting a big boot face-first. This was where pandemonium took over. Recovering to score a big huaracarana, Spade would follow up with the Spadeton to score the pin and secure his spot in the Finals. Dynamite Derrick, while staying true to his word on non-interference, made no promises regarding the post-match, and within a split-second of the bell sounding, Derrick was in the ring to further wear down Spade before next Tuesday. Miss Holly Wood would attempt to help Spade, only to be shoved to the corner by Derrick, intent on smooth sailing to the CCW Heavyweight title. Spade would repay Miss Holly Wood's favor in kind, as he went after Derrick hell bent for leather as the locker room cleared to restrain Spade. While his effort may have been overshadowed by the controversy at the end of the show, The Prophet made a statement in this tournament that I expect to carry over in the weeks to come, as he wrestled the hottest talent in CCW in what has been the match of the tournament so far. Do not be surprised to see Prophet with a CCW title match sooner than you'd think on down the road.
