Scumble a Wall for Fun in a Kidīs Room

Alyssa Davis
If your child is growing up and you want to design a room that is not simply a character theme, you may want to create an amazing look for your childīs bedroom by scumbling a wall. A paint technique, scumbling refers to the process of painting a wall in a deep, saturated color and then layering very thin layers of light colors over dark colors to give the wall a mottled or multi colored effect. If you include fun images in your scumbled design you can add a little whimsy as well as depth and texture, literally bringing the wall to life. Itīs a relatively easy way to create a fun mural. While it may sound a little complicated, the process is really very simple. It can be accomplished in five steps, and you can do it in a fun design and color that your child will simply adore.

Step1:

Picture a Design – Before you begin painting sketch out the elements of your design image so that you have an idea of how it will look when you are finished. For example, if you want to create a magical fairyland on your child's wall, you need to figure out exactly how you want your image to look and the elements you wish to include.

Step 2:

Color Scheme – Then you will have to decide what colors you want to use in your scumble mural. You will want to choose a very dark color for the base color and then lighter colors for the layers. Generally you will pick tones that coordinate with each other, though you can also use complementary colors as well. For example, for flowers, you may choose to use oranges and yellows.

Step 3:

Preparation – Next you will want to get all of your materials together and get ready to paint. You will need acrylic paint, brushes, rags, sponges, pencils and tape. Before painting, you will want to completely clean the surface of your wall. Then let it dry completely before you apply your deep, dark base coat along with the background designs of the larger elements of your mural.

Step 4:

Layer 1 – To paint your design you can use a template, stencils or simply paint freehand. Use your painter's tape to isolate each major element in the design. With the darkest shade paint in a circular motion from the outside in, and then repeat for all of the main elements in the mural.

Step 5:

Remaining Layers – In the final step of this process use very light colors and apply them over the areas of your major design. Blot the paint from your brush so that you are applying a very thin later of paint each time. Let each layer dry completely between layers. Apply several layers of the lighter colored paint, and you and your child will love the results.

By stumbling your child's wall they get their favorite color, like dark purple, and you get to soften it by layering lighter colors on it. This is a design that you will both love.
