If you have been following poker tournaments on TV or over the internet, you might have already heard about flush draws. The flush draw in Texas holdem describes a starting hand that has a potential of hitting a flush as the community cards or board cards are revealed. The key is for you to learn when to play a flush draw and when not to.

And the important rule of thumb in this situation is to keep your self from playing cards just because they are suited. You should not only consider if your hole cards are of the same suit, you should also take a good look at the ranks of the two suited cards.

Most novice players would make the mistake of chasing down a Flush Draw in Texas Holdem although their starting hand only shows a 5 high. Just because you picked up a suited 2 and 5 does not mean you can already beat aggressively the pre flop. If the stakes are too high for you, better fold. On the other hand, if you happen to have the opportunity to see the flop without putting in any more money into the pot, better grab that chance.

More often than not, novice players also fall victims to suited 4 and 5 combinations, hoping they will see a flush or a straight at the flop. When this happens, they tend to bet too aggressively and as the flop is revealed, they realize they have only wasted a good portion of their chips. To keep you from falling prey to this mistake, only play suited cards when you have face cards in your hands.

So remember that just because you have hit a Flush Draw in Texas Holdem does not mean you will already be betting loosely and aggressively. Always consider the rank of the cards on the flush draw and how they will potentially fare with the cards in the board.
