L.A. Labor Movement Announces Campaign Plan to Elect Phil Angelides for Governor
With over half a million union member voters in LA County organized labor to make the difference this election. (Los Angeles) - Workers and labor leaders representing various industries held a press conference last week to announce the Los Angeles Labor Movement’s campaign plan to elect Phil Angelides as the next Governor of the State of California. The plan will entail contacting over half a million union voters in Los Angeles County.
Governor Schwarzenegger can not be trusted, said Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary –Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. “He attacked our teachers, firefighters, police officers, homecare workers and nurses. We need Phil Angelides to fully fund public education, cut fees so students can afford to go to college, and take on big corporations that attack our workers.”
Through a field operation campaign that began last week, the Los Angeles Labor Movement will reach out to union members, specifically African Americans and Latinos. Campaign efforts will include contacting over half a million voters in 1300 precincts in Los Angeles County totaling an estimated 3.4 million in costs. Efforts will also include phone banking, precinct walking and direct mailing.
Firefighters put their lives on the line everyday along with the financial security of their families knowing that they might not come home one day,” said Dallas Jones, Secretary – Treasurer of the California Firefighters Association and the Alliance for Better California. “The last thing we need is Schwarzenegger to be re-elected and once again try to drop police and firefighter’s death benefit coverage for our widows and children.”
In addition to a field operation plan, paid media efforts have also begun. The Alliance for a Better California began running commercials in the Los Angeles media market last week and will continue to do so. Other media efforts by the Working Californians Campaign include radio buys.
