Thucydides, Pericles' Funeral Oration, Europe, the Ethiopianist Tyranny of Abyssinia and Ogaden

Dr. Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis
For heroes have the whole earth for their tomb; and in lands far from their own, where the column with its epitaph declares it, there is enshrined in every breast a record unwritten with no tablet to preserve it, except that of the heart. [4] These take as your model, and judging happiness to be the fruit of freedom and freedom of valor, never decline the dangers of war. (Epitafios Perikleous,

Thucydides, Peloponnesian War, II, 43, 3)

(In Greek)

Epitafios Perikleous, Pericles' Funeral Oration (Thucydides, Peloponnesian War, II, 34-46), is the famous speech was given by the Athenian leader Pericles after the first battles of the Peloponnesian war. Funerals after such battles were public rituals and Pericles used the occasion to make a classic statement of the value of democracy. It is probably not an exact quote, but a composition by Ancient Greek Historian Thucydides (c.460/455-399 BCE) representing the recollections of witnesses.

European statesmen, politicians, academia, intellectuals and thinkers have repeatedly identified the European ideals, principles and concepts as of Ancient Greek origin.

According to their interpretation and perception, Post-WWII Europe should be a free and democratic community of nations drawing from the Greco-Roman political heritage, mainly the Roman Res Publica, Stoic philosophers, Seneca in particular, and the Athenian City Republic.

These values have been evoked by 18th century European philosophers in their effort to usher Europe into the modern era of democratic societies. And all the fundamental texts of the European Union incorporated them down to our days, notably in the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights, which was signed and proclaimed by the Presidents of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission, at the European Council meeting in Nice on 7 December 2000.

"The European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights sets out in a single text, for the first time in the European Union's history, the whole range of civil, political, economic and social rights of European citizens and all persons resident in the EU.

These rights are divided into six sections:

Dignity

Freedoms

Equality

Solidarity

Citizens' rights

Justice

They are based, in particular, on the fundamental rights and freedoms recognised by the European Convention on Human Rights, the constitutional traditions of the EU Member States, the Council of Europe's Social Charter, the Community Charter of Fundamental Social Rights of Workers and other international conventions to which the European Union or its Member States are parties". Terror state Abyssinia (Fake Ethiopia)

In the light of the aforementioned, the credibility of the EU policy making is at its lowest when it comes to the Horn of Africa region, and more particularly to racist, colonial state of Abyssinia which has been renamed "Ethiopia" in order to cover the extensive, and incessant for more than 100 years, practices of ethnic cleansing, and cultural and physical genocides.

The abhorrent tyrannical regime of Abyssinia (Fake Ethiopia) is made of a very small ethno-religious basis, namely the Amhara and Tigray Tewahedo (Monophysitic) Abyssinians who represent ca. 18% of the entire country´s population.

Kushitic, Nilo-Saharan, and Bantu nations, earlier ruled independently, were subjugated in the last decades of the 19th century by the Amhara Monophysitic chieftain who worked closely with the English and French to adjust his expansion to their colonial needs in East Africa.

The Oromos, the Afars, the Sidamas, the Hadiyas, the Gedeos, the Kambaataw, the Kaffas, the Gumuz, the Anuak, the Nuer, the Agaw, and the Bertas have been progressively invaded, treated with inhuman monstrosity, imprisoned, massacred, and uninterruptedly tyrannized in order to become depersonalized, de-identified, acculturated stuff for the needs of the inherent Amhara – Tigray Hatred for which vast historical records have been saved down to our days.

Deprivation of Freedom in any sense has never become more complete, more comprehensive and more compact than in the case of the racist Amhara – Tigray tyranny.

With respect to the significant Amhara – Tigray Muslim minority, the religious oppression, backed by tonnes of Anti-Islamic literature, involved a multifaceted and multi-leveled policy-making that risks making of the obsolete country system one of the world´s most explosive volcanoes of Islamic Terrorism.

Terror in all its aspects has been the Abyssinian state´s attitude toward the Ogaden region whereby Ogadeni Somalis constitute the totality of the indigenous populations, ever since the English colonials transferred the colonial authority to the Amhara king Haile Selassie in the 1950s.

Ogaden

The situation turned worse after the Ogaden War 1977 whereby Somalia vanquished Abyssinia (fake Ethiopia) only to face the threat of the Soviet tanks and the Cuban brigades that were mysteriously tolerated by Europe and America.

The Amhara – Tigray religious tribalism determined the nature of all regime changes in Abyssinia, thus offering a most problematic – an intolerable for every humanist – continuity in the omnipresent, race-based, racial odium-intoxicated Abyssinian secret services, army, diplomacy, and administration – the so-called "deep state". For this reason, under absolute monarchy, third world communism or, since 1991 – 1992, pseudo-federal republic, all the aforementioned nations and religious groups, and notably the Muslim Ogadenis, found themselves under conditions worse than those prevailing in Gulag camps in the former USSR.

It is absolutely shameful for EU to support the racist regime of the obsolete state (http://allafrica.com/stories/200905250296.html), and tolerate the pro-tyranny advocacy of the kleptomaniac (http://globalvoicesonline.org/2008/01/30/louis-michel-heckled-by-congolese-protestors-at-the-london-school-of-economics/) Louis Michel who so much contradicts himself while attacking the late Austrian statesman Jorg Haider (http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-59617169.html), whereas his racist Nazi friend Meles Zenawiis has been accused for genocide by tonnes of reports published by Human Rights NGOs and humanitarian agencies, notably the famous HRW Report on Ogaden (indicatively: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/human-rights-watch-report-on-ogaden-demands-un-intervention-in-ethiopia.html).

A New Beginning?

A new beginning in the EU foreign policy making is necessary particularly in the light of the ongoing Somali crisis that risks being propagated throughout the region due to the racist practices of the Abyssinian tyrant Meles Zenawi.

The hearing "Human Rights and Security Situation in Ogaden", opened today by Ms Ana Gomes MEP, who is chairing the event, and Mr. Marino Busdachin, General Secretary of UNPO, may be an excellent opportunity for Europeans to reassess their sources, ideals, origin and identity.

A strict denunciation of the Cenotaph Abyssinia, and a series of measures against the world´s worst tyranny will help bring the racist regime to its knees, while the initiation of impeachment proceedings against Meles Zenawi and his administration would demonstrate that the European Union still sticks to the ideals evoked at the time of its inception.

I herewith republish the announcement of the hearing at the European Parliament.

Silent Cry

Film screening (excerpts)

Ms. Ana-Maria Gomes, MEP

Mr. Marino Busdachin, UNPO

Mr. Abdullahi Mohamed, African Rights Monitor

Ms. Xasan Ruqiyo, Ogaden Communities & Civil Society Association

The hearing, whose topic is "Human Rights and Security Situation in Ogaden," will be opened by Ms Ana Gomes MEP, who is chairing the event, and Mr. Marino Busdachin, General Secretary of UNPO. Mr. Abdullahi Mohamed, from African Rights Monitor, and Ms. Xasan Ruqiyo from the Ogaden Communities & Civil Society Association will be speaking on behalf of Ogaden.

There will also be excerpts from a film, Silent Cry, a grassroots documentary produced by British students, reporting the lives of Somali refugees from Ogaden. These stories were discovered accidentally when the students, visiting Nairobi on vacation, met Omar, a taxi driver who shared with them his personal tragic story. The students then went to the Ifo Refugee Camp, in Northern Kenya, where they interviewed several refugees, including victims of rape and torture.

Ogaden is a region in eastern Ethiopia with a majority population of Somalis. The Ethiopian government has waged a long-term war against the Ogaden, suppressing the region and its people. Years of neglect and war have left Ogaden in a state of turmoil, and human rights abuses by the Ethiopian government are commonplace. There is limited infrastructure, and due to Ethiopia´s corrupted federal structure, no political power on the part of the people of Ogaden to develop the area.

The hearing is sponsored by Ms Ana Gomes MEP, from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (www.socialistsanddemocrats.eu) of the European Parliament in collaboration with the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (http://www.unpo.org/).
