WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CELLPHONES AND BRAIN TUMORS
The extremely well - written and researched scientific report:
"Cellphones and Brain Tumors -15 reasons for Concern- Science, Spin and the Truth behind interphone," of August 25, 2009, should be read by everyone using a cell phone. In this report, the Endorsers from 14 countries, state:
" We the undersigned believe it is essential that governments and the media understand the independent science regarding cellphone use and brain tumors as well as the design flaws of the 13 country Interphone study. The widespread nature of wireless telecommunication systems requires that society understand any potential risks and that this understanding be as current as possible with the latest evidence-based science. We endorse both the message and urgency of this report".
Below, is a very moving and meaningful quote from one of this report´s endorsers, who lost his beloved young daughter to a brain tumor.
" In a world where a drug cannot be launched without proof that it is safe, where the use of herbs and natural compounds available to all since early Egyptian times are now questioned, their safety subjected to the deepest scrutiny, where a new food cannot be launched without prior approval, the idea that we can use mobile telephony, including masts, and introduce WIFI and mobile phones without restrictions around our 5 years olds is double-standard gone mad. I speak not just as an editor and scientist that has looked in depth at all research, but as a father that lost his beloved daughter to a brain tumor".- Chris Woollams M.A. Biochemistry (Oxon). Editor Integrated Cancer and oncology News (icon magazine), CEO CANCERactive.
The report provides extremely valuable information on scientific findings from studies of cell phone use and the risk of brain tumors. These studies, independent of Industry funding, show consistently that there is a "significant* " (* in this document , it is a shorthand term-of-the art for "statistically significant" ) risk of brain tumors from the use of cell phone. The report is well balanced as it also includes telecommunications studies funded by industries.
It is quite important to note that the report mentions that electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure limits that are advocated by industry and used by governments are based on a false premise that a cell phone´s electromagnetic radiations has no biological effects except for heating,
There are thousands of studies that show biological effects from electromagnetic radiation at exposures levels that are far below where heating occurs ( non-thermal effects). The extremely valuable BioInitiative Report, provides extensive documentation of studies that show that they are indeed non-thermal effects.
Even though industry is downplaying as much as possible the risks of brain tumors, Dr. George Carlo, the leader of Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association ´s ( CTIA) presented in February 1999, in its 3 consecutive meetings, the result of CTIA own studies, which was, that cell phone use, was causing brain tumors. Among the findings were:
A statistically significant doubling of brain cancer risk.
A statistically significant dose-response risk of acoustic neuroma with more than 6 years of cell phone use
Finding of genetic damage in human blood when exposed to cell phone radiation.
It is mentioned in the report that subsequent research funded by Industry (2000- 2002) showed also, that the use of cell phone elevated the risk of brain tumors.
Independent research studies led in Sweden by Professor Lennart Hardell, found quite significant increased risk of brain tumors from the use of 10 years or more of cell phone or cordless phone. Among their numerous very significant findings are the following:
The risk of brain cancer increases by 5% for every 100 hours of cell phone use.
The risk of brain cancer increases by 8% for every year of cell phone use.
There was a 280% increase risk of brain cancer after 10 years or more of digital cell phone use
There was a 420% increase risk of brain cancer for users of digital cell phone who, when they started using a cell phone, were teenagers, or younger.
In several countries there have been numerous governmental warnings about children´s use of cell phone, since the risk of brain tumors from the use of cell phone is the highest in children, and the younger a child is when starting using a cell phone, the higher the risk. It alarming to know, that in 2005, studies in the United States showed that over 50 % of children owned their personal cell phone, and, since then the percentage of children using cell phone is much higher.
France, for instance, is the first European Government to announce publicly a proposal for an immediate ban on some aspects of the use of mobile phone based exclusively on potential health risks. France is gearing toward making it illegal to market cell phone to children, and recently has banned cell phones in elementary schools . France is also requiring that manufacturers come up with a phone made just for children that would allow only sending and receiving text messages, and consequently would not allow children to place the cell phone to the side of their head.
Officials in Russia, have made the recommendation that children under the age of 18, should not use cell phone at all. Also, in Germany, Belgium, Israel, India, and United Kingdom, the use of cell phone by children has been discouraged. The Radiation and Nuclear Power Authority in Finland, has urged parents to err
on the side of caution.
In Canada, the Toronto´s department of Public health has advised that children under 8 should use mobile phones only in emergencies, and that teenagers should limits calls to less than 10 minutes. The Health Ministry of Israel has also advised caution.
In its position paper, in January 2009, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority ( STUK) stated : " With children , we have reason to be especially careful," and it recommended that the use of mobile phone by children be restricted to text messages, limited by parents in regard to the number and duration of calls, avoidance of calls from a moving train or a moving car, make use of hand- free devices, and avoidance of calls form rural areas, since cell phone radiate much more power in order to connect to a distant base station for cell phone.
Remarkably, on July 9, 2009, the Korean Times reported the following: The Seoul Metropolitan Council plans to draw up draft regulations next week to ban the use of cell phones at primary and secondary schools. For elementary schools, the rules would mean that students can´t come to schools with phones. Middle and high schools would collect cell phones and return them after schools. "Cellular phones could harm the study atmosphere at schools and could cause health risks for kids. It is desirable to prohibit students form using cell phones at schools" said Lee Jong - eun , head of the city council for education and culture".
And even, Dr. Elizabeth Cardis, the head of Interphone studies, stated in her interview with the French Newspaper "Le Monde",
"I am therefore globally in agreement with the idea of restricting the use of cell phones by children".
Concerned citizens, physicians, scientists, researchers, health advocate should immediately contact their national governments
to take a powerful public stand on this crucial issue. There are already available immediate actions in the Precautionary Principle Applied to Cell phone use, in Appendix 2 of the report.
In April 2009, the European Parliament voted (559 to 22, with 8 abstentions) for a set of changes based on health concerns associated with Electromagnetic fields. Some of these actions called for, were:
To review the scientific basis and adequacy of the EMF exposure limits.
Publish a yearly report by the EU on the level of electromagnetic radiation.
To consider "biological effects when accessing the potential health impacts of electromagnetic radiation" and for "research to address potential health problems by developing solutions that will negate or reduce the pulsating and amplitude modulation" used in transmission.
Member states , "To make available …maps showing exposure to high –voltage power lines, radio frequency and microwaves…telecommunication masts, radio repeaters, and telephone antennas".
Member states , " to increase research funding" to evaluate" long-term adverse effects" from cell phones for an "investigation of harmful effects…from different sources of EMF, particularly where children are concerned".
"Greatly concerned" that "insurance companies are tending to exclude coverage for the risk associated with EMFs from liability insurance".
Finance a "wide ranging awareness campaign" aimed at young people to minimize their exposures to cell phone radiation.
Condemnation of "marketing campaign" for the sale of mobile phones designed solely for children".
Member states, " to recognize persons with electrohypersensitivity (EHS) as being disabled " so as to assure their equal protection and equal opportunity under the law.
Imposition of "labeling" requirement for transmitted powers on all " wireless operated devices ".
