Couch Potato Diplomacy Or Can We Really Solve What’s Ailing Us

Dana G. Smith
In the everyday schemes of men, the newspapers are full of it. From the antic's of the rich and too much time on their hands congressmen to the fanatical leaders of foreign regimes, the rhetoric gets thick. How many times have we read of the North Korean dictators rants? How about Chavez in his little dictatorship down south of the border. Take for example Israel and the Palestinians with President Abbas at the head. We have tried to bring the two sides together. Recently, a new attempt at peace has been started in the past few months. In the end, the problems always seem to continue.

In addition, we see already in this new attempt to bring peace, double talk is beginning already. In his first breath, Abbas wants to work solving the crisis in the Palestinian area. He looks to the USA and its allies to help them. The double-speak then begins to pour out, that is, according to the Palestinian Media Watch who recorded Abbas’ words saying:

Israel... It is not required of Hamas, nor of Fatah, nor of the Popular Front to recognize Israel."

However he does demand that Hamas ministers and Fatah ministers of a future government recognize the existence of their Israeli counterparts.

Abbas: "How can this government, or these ministers, not recognize their [Israeli] counterparts, and then solve [Palestinian] people's problems?... How can he make an agreement with him if he does not recognize him?"

Talk about confusing. Abbas doesn't see the need for Hamas, Fatah, or the Popular Front to recognize Israel's right to exist. However, he wants future Hamas, Fatah, or Popular Front Ministers in the P.A. government to recognize Israel's right to exist. How can you bring total peace like that? You cannot.

It is too bad the current American government and its allies can't see through these double diatribes. There is no way a permanent peace can be made with people who will not recognize your own right to live or exist where you are. Even if the ministers say they recognize Israel in word, their deeds of the past have shown them different. History of the process is replete with the terrorists and the Palestinian's breaking the peace process.

The current madness between Israel and the Palestinians is spreading. Just take a look at Iraq. What a mess. We have three divisions of Muslims: Sunni, Shite, and Kurds. Can they get along? Apparently not! They are bent on killing one another. The count of dead innocent civilians go on and on (not to mention our soldiers). Look at Afghanistan, now FOX News was reporting today that the people in that nation favor the Taliban back. Go figure. Puzzling? Yes, but then that is why we should not try to solve all problems in the world. We have trouble enough of our own.

To make this World Goo, just follow the easy directions. Take the middle east, add in the crazy dictators around the world who hate us, drop in the United Nations and their lack of really solving problems, stir in places like Sudan where millions have died and there you have it. Garnish this liberally with dictators like those in North Korea and Venezuela. The current recipe situation in the World is easy to make and fast.

Seriously, though, we do not have enough soldiers, money, time, or initiative to solve this. With all our clout, so to speak, what can we really do? We can't convince the U.N. to do much of anything? Our allies have a hard time backing us! North Korea is testing Nuclear weapons in spite of us. Hugo Chavez still is bent on taking down America. Israel and the Palestinians are needing to make peace-again. Then we have the ongoing situation in the Sudan, which is still killing millions of people.

But the news is not all bad. Monday night football is still on. That is on ESPN. So forget about the world affairs tonight and watch some football. Might as well, the problems will still be there tomarrow.
