CONGRESSWOMAN ZOE LOFGREN ENDORSES PHIL ANGELIDES FOR GOVERNOR

California Democratic Congressional Delegation Chair Joins Campaign Co-Chairs Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi, Majority of State's Congressional Democrats in Supporting Angelides.

California State Treasurer Phil Angelides today announced that Rep. Zoe Lofrgren, Chair of California's Democratic Congressional Delegation, has endorsed his candidacy for governor and pledged her full support to help Angelides unseat Governor Schwarzenegger in 2006.

Rep. Lofgren, who represents San Jose and other parts of Santa Clara County in Congress, joins Angelides 2006 co-chairs Senator Barbara Boxer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and a majority of the state’s Democratic members of Congress in endorsing Angelides for governor.

Phil Angelides has the private and public sector experience and the vision that will make him a great governor for this state,” said Rep. Lofgren. “Phil will lead California on the high road to prosperity. He will fight to ensure that our state has the most livable cities, the cleanest environment, and the best-educated workforce so that we will be able to compete in the global economy of the 21st century.”

Rep. Lofgren will serve as Chair of Members of Congress for Angelides 2006, a group that includes Representatives Joe Baca, Xavier Becerra, Lois Capps, Dennis Cardoza, Jim Costa, Anna Eshoo, Sam Farr, Robert Filner, Mike Honda, Barbara Lee, Doris Matsui, Juanita Millender-McDonald, George Miller, Lucille Roybal-Allard, Linda Sanchez, Loretta Sanchez, Adam Schiff, Hilda Solis, Ellen Tauscher, Mike Thompson, Maxine Waters, and Lynn Woolsey.

Phil Angelides has earned unprecedented early support and momentum from a broad spectrum of supporters - progressives and moderates, civic leaders, business leaders, groups representing working Californians, community leaders, and more than 200 elected officials from across the state. Last month, over two dozen prominent Silicon Valley leaders endorsed Angelides’ candidacy, including Representatives Eshoo and Honda, former Secretary of Defense Bill Perry, John Doerr, Dianne and Regis McKenna, and Andrew and Deborah Rappaport.

Angelides had a successful career as a businessman and served as unpaid Chair of the California Democratic Party before taking office as State Treasurer in 1999, the only elected office he has held. During just six years in public office, Angelides has gained a reputation as an innovative national leader advancing groundbreaking new ideas and initiatives to invest in inner cities, expand home ownership, create small businesses, protect our environment, and increase educational opportunities for young people.
