Montana Poker Tournaments - Texas Holdem Overpair

Pearl J Kerr

A Texas holdem overpair is a pocket pair which has a higher value than any of the cards on the board. According to the poker experts, for an overpair to be a decent hand, it has to be a double 9 or better as the odds of the other players having a bigger overpair will be much reduced. Playing an overpair is a lot similar to playing a top pair. And as a general rule, a player must bet aggressively in order to chase away drawing hands or anyone who´s hanging around with overcards. The best thing a player should do is to first analyse and see if the board has a flush draw possibility.

It is also important to know what types of opponents a player has when making a decision about what strategy to apply if one has an overpair. So let´s review some of the different types of poker players for you to be able to refresh your mind and to update whatever tactics you have once you encounter an overpair.

If you have a tight or aggressive opponent, usually the best thing to do is to raise or fold. A raise from this type of player typically indicates that he has a top pair with a solid kicker. It is best to reraise him in order to chase him away and not allow him to improve.

Just in case during the course of the game, you get called by a tight passive player, most likely this player has top pair or even better. A player may continue on betting until the turn card but can consider checking on the river. A player may check on the turn and river if his opponent reraised him here.

Loose aggressive type players will reraise even if he only hit or second bottom pair. You can reraise him back in order to compel him to fold. If he doesn´t fold, you can choose to check the turn and the river to just let your opponent do the betting for you.
