Letting Our Imaginations Destroy Us

DL Ennis
As our imaginations go, so goes our future—if it is interesting or exciting enough to us. In the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s man dreamt of going to the moon, in the 1960’s we did. Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues under the Sea” (1870) was born of his dream (imagination) of exploring the depths of earth’s oceans and seas.

Before and since Alexander the Great, men have fought one another over many things, (hate, greed, land, religion and sport, just to name a few). Almost always—especially in modern times—the true reason for going to war is disguised by any other reason than the true agenda of the perpetrator. Often time’s war seems to be instigated by leaders who look at war as a strategic game to keep the troops sharp, and to play their war games without putting themselves in harms way. After all, that is what most of these leaders were bread to do. They are playing war games -like when we were children using plastic soldiers, only they are playing with the lives of real people.

It should be evident by the events taking place in our world today that we are using our imaginations to destroy ourselves and our wondrous planet; our home; Earth. It is rather like ripping the boards of your house to burn for warmth. It works for now, but sooner or later your house will be no more!

This past June the New York Daily News published an article by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Michael Goodwin, entitled “It’s WWIII, and U.S. is out of ideas.”

Last week’s headlines prove the point: North Korea fires missiles, Iran talks of nukes again, Iraq carnage continues, Israel invades Gaza, England observes one-year anniversary of subway bombing. And, oh, yes, the feds stop a plot to blow up tunnels under the Hudson River. World War III has begun.”

I believe that Michael Goodwin, though only grazing the story, has the right idea; World War III has indeed begun—or is close; hostilities already encompasses more of the world today than in WW I. With all that is going on throughout the world today we are headed into a world war which will encompasses more countries than any previous war in history. It’s going to be worse this time and we in the U.S. may see it within our own borders.

Since June, Israel has been to war with Lebanon, the hostilities in the Sudan/Darfur region have increased, Iran has said unequivocally that they will not halt uranium enrichment and North Korea has said they are going to test a nuclear weapon. Russia and Georgia are in the midst of new tensions and there are other battles raging in other parts of the world.

Our imaginations can produce wonderful outcomes, and the imaginations of madmen can destroy us!
