Fidel Castro Has Cancer, [Or Not]

Ken Hughes
It was reported by Time and CNN on Friday that Fidel Castro may have cancer and will never return to his former position of Revolutionary Leader of Cuba. If this is true then Cuba is in for a very unique second 20th century revolution when Castro dies. Brother Roul Castro has neither the intellect the courage or the political backing to rule Cuba after Fidel is gone.

Roul Castro was a protégé of Che Guevara the man Fidel Castro sent packing once the Cuban revolution was over. Che Guevara was a ruthless murder who would have been able to side track Osama bin Laden if he were alive today. Che Guevara’s persona was a marketing tool used by the Castro regime to sell the Cuban revolution to the world, a very successful tool at that. I have little doubt Fidel has Che assassinated in Bolivia.

What will happen to Cuba once Fidel Castro dies? It’s doubtful Cuban expatriates will be rushing back to take up the fight to regain Cuban independence, most are at an age when they prefer playing dominoes in the city parks of Miami. Most of the younger Cuban Americans are too young and to settled to return and fight for the country they never knew.

What is more likely than not is the new leaders who take over the Cuban government will make overtures to the United States to lift the embargo and with in a few years Cuba will become the Los Vegas of the Caribbean.

Castro may have been ruthless in his ways but no more so than his predecessors. The Cubans who rode out the storm of the revolution will always remember it was Castro who chased the Gringo’s out of Cuba. It was Castro who brought equality of citizenship to Cuba. It was Castro who brought down the aristocracy. It’s been Castor who for over 40 years has played the father figure for Cuba’s poor. Castro taught the remaining Cubans to be proud of what they didn’t have and be obedient to him for what they did have.

Castro was the illegitimate son of a Cuban Aristocrat who knew both poverty and affluence in his youth. He was 17 years old before he was brought to the Manor House and shed the distinction of being a bastard child. Castro was University Educated he’s a very intelligent man who knows more about psychology than most PhD’s.

There is little doubt in my mind had then President Eisenhower recognized Cuba and invited Fidel Castro to the Whitehouse as a head of state 45 years of communist rule in Cuba could have been avoided. Those weren’t AK-47s Castors men used to liberate Cuba they were guns and ammunition bought and paid for by the American tax payer given to a corrupt Cuban Army then sold to the rebels. Then president Batista’s soldiers were trained for the parade ground not for combat.

Forty plus years later there some still have dreams of returning to Cuba and taking up where life left off for them. They are old men now and dreams are all that’s left. A new Cuba will not resemble the old Cuba they knew. The new Cuba will be a coalition of the corrupt not the privileged corrupt as it is now. Only Fidel Castro could hold his revolution together while all those around him failed. The next generation of Cuban leaders will submit to greed and by doing so rebuild a prosperous Cuba.

Fidel Castro was successful because he exported dissention he soothed those who were obedient and loyal to him. When he was rejected by the Americans he immediately turned to the world’s second super power for recognition. He maintained a presence on the world stage, He was an international giant from a small island in the Caribbean, and we must admit Fidel Castro was charismatic.

What will happen to Cuba once Castro is gone, one thing’s for sure there’ll be no second Bay of Pigs invasion. This time the invasion will be by American investment dollars. In a very short time Cuba will become a Vacationers Mecca, There’s something about Cuba that’s unique to the other islands in the Caribbean, I can’t explain it but I’ve felt it every time I visited the island.
