Deja Vou All Over Again

Ken Hughes
It seems every national election the political parties with the assistance of the Media manage to dig up some dirt on one or more candidates hold it in abeyance until just before the votes are cast then spring it on the public hoping it will sway the election one way or the other.

Now we’re learning from the latest Drudge Report much of this Mark Foley thing may have been a prank that got out of hand when it was picked up by some of George Soras operatives. Mark Foley’s resignation indicates the smoke was coming from the fire. He undoubtedly felt there was enough truth to the story he needed to leave town. Just how bad this is only time will tell.

Usually it’s something that’s been floating around Washington for years, something everyone in Washington knew as mere titillation. Much of the culture in Washington has the morals of an ally cat. This isn’t an indictment of everyone who lives and works in Washington it’s an attitude that’s prevalent in our nation’s capital. What the rest of the country would consider sexual abuse is more often than not sexual enticement. Sex is a bartering tool for all kinds of political rewards.

If Dennis Hastert is forced to step down from his leadership position then every member from both parties of the House of Representatives should resign. There’s no way if the House Pages knew of Mark Foley’s conduct the members of the house didn’t know, their dumb but their not stupid.

Member’s indiscretions are often over looked in favor of support for a particular legislation. Then there’s always “You cover my six and I’ll cover yours.” Don’t ask don’t tell covers more than homosexuality in Washington. Government electives, appointees and bureaucrats live in a glass house they are required to make deals and overlook indiscretions in order to survive.

There’s at least one Media person for each of them, and it’s the Medias job to fill their news space each day. They can’t do that with good news, good news doesn’t sell. In slow news days they go to the manure pile and start digging. Around election time they go back to the manure pile and start digging deeper.

This isn’t an indictment of all of Washington thousands of government workers show up at their jobs each day and perform thousands of tasks that keep the country running. The majority of the Congress are dedicated men and women who do their best under the circumstances. The media seldom writes about the good people, they’re focused on the bad ones and that’s what the public judges their government by. To paraphrase the late Will Rogers, “All I know is what I read in the papers, therefore I know nothing.”

There was a time when reporters held themselves to a very high standard, the editors and publishers were the dregs of the news room. Today a reporter is about as reliable as a Los Vegas Hooker. They sell themselves for fame and glory. Trust and truth rate at the bottom of the scale, unfortunately so goes the news so goes the nation.

Fortunately the dissemination of information is changing, the Blog and the Internet News Magazines are holding reporters accountable for what they write and say. Not everything posted on the internet by novas columnist is true however for every opinion there’s a counter opinion allowing the reader a choice. We are now the most informed in history news has become a commodity available 24 / 7 from everywhere in the world. This may be the salvation of mankind an informed public is difficult to deceive.

When I look at what the worlds achieved in the past half century I’m less concerned with those things that are meant to confuse us. I have faith when things go to far adrift God will adjust the tiller and set us on the proper course. The question is will we pay attention and be able to keep up.

This is a harsh critique of the Media and the Government, if half or a quarter of my article makes sense to the readers then it’s been worth the effort to me. As a columnist it’s not my job to change minds it’s my job to make readers think so they’ll make informed decisions.
