A Texas holdem poker rake is a certain amount which is taken from a player by the card room wherein he plays. This is usually five to ten percent of the total amount of the pot. It is done in order to generate income for the game operator, since unlike in other card games where a player plays against the house, poker games are played among different players.

Rakes are also taken from the poker players at a table for the purpose of having a jackpot. The jackpot is accumulated from the rake and the more players that play the game, will of course, entails more rake taken and the bigger the jackpot. When a particular player has a bad beat he will win the jackpot. A bad beat occurs when a player is holding a very high hand but still loses the pot to a player who is holding an even higher ranking hand.

A Texas holdem jackpot pool of money is increased by a jackpot drop, typically fifty cents to a dollar for an every hand that is raked and as mentioned previously, it will be distributed to the poker players when a very strong hand is beaten. When strong hands is beaten, such as four of a kind, aces full or other requirements depending on the card room that a particular player is playing, that player is entitled to win the jackpot.
