THE MAYOR OF BROWARD COUNTY (FL) PROCLAIMS MAY 2010 AS MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY AWARENESS MONTH
It is stated in the Proclamation that, as a result of global environmental pollution, people of all ages in Broward County and throughout the world have developed a condition known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), and that MCS is a painful chronic condition, characterized by hypersensitivity reactions to the environment for which there is currently no cure, and that the symptoms associated with MCS include acute reactions to chemicals, food, medication, severe neurological problems, muscle and joint pain, memory problems, and respiratory difficulties.
It is also stated , that MCS is recognized by the Americans with Disabilities Act , the U.S. Access Board, Social Security Administration , the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and numerous other governmental agencies and commissions, and that the health of the general population is at risk from chemical exposures that can lead to this environmentally-induced illness, and that this illness may be preventable through the reduction or avoidance of chemicals in the air, water, and food, in both indoor and outdoor environments, and through further scientific research to be conducted including in the area of genetics.
It is also pointed out, in the Proclamation, that people with MCS need the support of the medical establishment, and the understanding of family, friends, co-workers as they struggle with their illness and adapt to new lifestyles.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a most devastating worldwide epidemic, affecting an estimated 16% of the US population. This terrible illness is triggered by exposures to toxic chemicals in the environment and is the direct consequence of global environmental pollution.
