Title: My Alien Penfriend

AUTHOR: Faiz Kermani

Darius is eagerly awaiting the next letter from his new penpal. He loves to hear all about Zmod’s home planet of Bartoch, with its moving rocks, pet glods, and live volcanoes. And Zmod looks forward to learning about the search for the mystery monster, football, and Darius’ dog, Ranger.

My Alien Penfriend” is an imaginative compilation of letters, newspaper stories, and third person descriptions of the developing friendship between two boys from separate universes. Darius shares stories of his earthly life: his struggles with school, his sister, and the ongoing search for the Loch Ness monster. Zmod, on the other hand, writes about the politic and environmental woes of his planet, and the tension of living so close to a potentially dangerous volcano.

Faiz Kermani has created an interesting and unique world in “My Alien Penfriend”. Through their letters, the boys and the reader can see how similar they are to each other, despite their different worlds. Although often simplistic in style, the story will hold a young readers attention with its imaginative detail, humorous youthful tales, and gently didactic undertones.

Fiaz Kermani lives and writes in London England.

Recommended as a fun and easy read for the young, budding science fiction fan.
