Why I’m A Conservative

Ken Hughes
It was a cold December morning in 1952, the mist was rising off the waters in the harbor surrounding New York City. As the mist lifted we could see the Lady With The Torch slowly come into our view. That my friends is a gut-wrenching experience that stays with you for a lifetime.

I’d been living as an Expatriate in Central America for several years. The morning we arrived in America my thoughts were most likely those of an immigrant, The sights and sounds in Manhattan enamored me as much as any of my immigrant campaigns. We discussed our futures in this new land. I was on my way to California to reunite with family I hadn’t seen in years. One thing we all agreed on, the streets of America are truly paved with opportunity. We had no doubt we would all be successful at whatever we chose as an occupation. After all this was America.

Fifty years have passed and I still see the streets paved with opportunity for immigrants, legal or illegal, it makes no difference.

I see Americans passing up opportunity after opportunity waiting for someone else to make their lives better. Waiting for a government program or government grant to come along and make their lives whole. This is called Liberalism. Immigrants don’t qualify for such programs and grants and therefore they must exert more effort to attain the good life. This is called conservatism.

America is the greatest nation on earth, few Americans leave to go elsewhere, with the exception of overseas employment. Americans don’t move to other countries because of dissatisfaction with this country. The world moves to America, and why is this? It’s because the streets are paved with opportunity. Seventy-five percent of all technology created in the twentieth century has been created in America. Is this because Americans are brilliant or is it because brilliance from elsewhere has moved to America?

Immigration, is being challenged. Many want our borders sealed. Accusations have been made. Illegal immigration and outsourcing are taking jobs from Americans. This is of course the furthest thing from the truth. Jobs are available for any American who will accept a position requiring 40 hours work a week. For any American willing to settle for less than a management positions. America in-sources more jobs from outside the country than we outsource. Unemployment is at an all time low. Every economic indicator tells us we’re better off than any time in our history. Still Americans complains, this is the land of bitching, whining, and complaining. The land where nothing’s ever enough and everything else is too much. The land where prosperity fuels dissatisfaction and satisfies the people appetite for discontent.

After fifty years I’ve yet to decide if I have the mentality of an immigrant or just an observant citizen. I know the American mentality is more of the idle rich, than the idle poor. John F. Kennedy said “Ask not what your country can do for you, rather what you can do for your country.” He made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. His words are more meaningful today than ever before.

To answer the question of why I subscribe to conservative politics.

I believe every person is responsible for not only his own welfare but for the welfare of the nation. I believe with hard work and a trust in God we can do without so much government assistance and regulations inhibiting personal growth.

Wake up America the coffee pot’s boiling over.
