Should the WWE have a seasonal schedule?

Eric Schomburg
I have been receiving email after email regarding the Kurt Angle situation, and most of the emails, written by WWE marks, keep saying “TNA should be ashamed for hiring Kurt Angle after all his body is beat up and he’s addicted to painkillers.” I find it factitious that these WWE marks never question how and why his body has been so beaten up. The answer is WWE’s hectic schedule. Which leads me to this question. Should the WWE be coerced in producing a season schedule rather than a full-time schedule?

Every sports venue has a season. For Baseball it starts in the spring and ends in the fall. For football it begins in the fall and ends in the winter. For basketball it starts in the winter and ends in the spring. Should the WWE reduce it’s hectic schedule to a seasonal schedule? What would it be like for fans of the WWE to have to wait until a season opener before any wrestling is produced for the WWE?

First, a lot of the wrestlers would finally catch a break from traveling and actually get to spend time with their families, heal up, and maybe do some training to get back in the season. At least this way the WWE could be considerate for their wrestlers instead of working them to death. This would also boost merchandise sales in the WWE’s library, because fans will seem desperate and buy the DVD’s just to get that “quick fix” of wrestling. Having a season will also boost the anticipation for the WWE and have some fans yearn for the opener. The NFL has had the highest rated shows since it’s opening season, and it seems to get bigger and bigger.

The wrestlers, writers, referees, and other staff members would catch the biggest break of all. Let’s be honest, no wrestling fan forgets about their favorite wrestler or their favorite wrestling storyline. If Chris Jericho would come back to the WWE, no one would look at Jericho and say “who is this guy?” Instead he would get a standing ovation, because he’s Chris Jericho.

If the WWE ever does a season schedule, the risks of injury will decrease as well. Also, the writing staff will actually have time to think of good storylines rather than think of a quick porno-style storyline that doesn’t entertain the fans, insult the average man’s intelligence, and doesn’t go over so much that it appears worthless.

Another reason why this would be a good idea is Vince would FINALLY catch a break from working. I will admit, Vince has worked constantly, nonstop, and it appears that there is no end to his work ethic, and he desperately needs a break just as much as the wrestlers themselves.

The reason why I bring up this topic up is to have people think about what they say when they defend a wrestling company. Should the WWE have a season schedule? I believe it would do them some good if they did have a season schedule. Maybe from April to December, because this way the fans get the summer to watch wrestling, Christmas time for the WWE merchandise to be a big hit, and we can’t forget about April’s WrestleMania.

It’s obvious that the WWE will never do this, because God forbid Vince needs the money, and the fans won’t stand for it, but if these hardcore WWE fans feel the need to be considerate to the wrestlers that bust their ass everyday to put on a show then you would figure the wrestling fans or WWE fans would take their own consideration and say, “Okay, look, Vince is working these guys too damn hard, maybe he should give them a break.”

I find it strange that no one ever questioned Vince McMahon when Ric Flair's ex-wife told reporters that he was addicted to steriods and painkillers. I find it strange no one questioned Vince's decision to use Austin after SummerSlam when everyone and their mother knew Austin had a bad neck. I find it odd that Vince McMahon continued to let Jake Roberts wrestle knowing that he was a drug addict.

I don't try to be a WWE hater or a TNA mark, because let's be honest, there for a while I thought TNA sucked with the belabored Sting vs. Jarrett feud; however, I find it uplifting that Kurt Angle is going to TNA. Yes, I would be disappointed in TNA if they had Angle wrestle before he was fully healed up, but no one questioned Vince using Angle in HARDCORE MATCHES on ECW.

TNA has a lighter schedule, so if anything the fans that say TNA should be ashamed should thank TNA for saving Angle's career and giving him a lighter schedule to work with rather than continue to be relegated to a watered-down show like ECW in which 90% of Championship matches or the main events are under "Extreme Rules."

Let's be honest, in TNA when was the last time Jeff Jarrett wrestled on free tv? When was the last time Sting wrestled on free tv? Christian was rare to wrestle on free tv in TNA. Did anyone ever thought that maybe TNA would do the same to Angle? Maybe do some promos, interviews, and other things backstage? No. Everyone was quick to judge TNA just because they want to use Kurt Angle's name and popularity to get TNA over. What's wrong with that? The WWE marks didn't complain when Goldberg came to the WWE, did they?

The WWE marks need to stop absolving Vince and WWE's actions just because one guy jumped ship to join another company that has a much lighter schedule. Then again these are the same marks that keep asking Hogan for “one more match” and he has an artificial hip, two bad knees, and has to inject painkillers IN his spine. Maybe some of the WWE fans need to be considerate of the wrestlers, so I say give the WWE a season schedule maybe these WWE fans will appreciate the product and the wrestlers more.
