Ros-Lehtinen Comments on Senate Passage of Iran Sanctions Bill, Urges Quick Action
"The House and Senate must now quickly agree on comprehensive, effective sanctions to stop the Iranian nuclear threat, and send a bill to the President´s desk for implementation immediately.
"But the President need not wait for Congress to act. He can and must act today to apply crippling economic and political pressures on the Iranian regime.
"It is long past time to get serious on Iran. Overtures have failed. Talks have dragged on and on, with nothing to show for them.
"Each day we fail to act is another day Iran advances the nuclear, unconventional weapons, and missile capabilities it can use to threaten America and our allies with destruction."
Ros-Lehtinen is the leading Republican co-sponsor of H.R. 2194, the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act of 2009, which mandates targeted sanctions against the Iranian regime to pressure Iran to suspend its nuclear weapons program, unconventional weapons and ballistic missile development, and support for violent Islamist extremism. The bill imposes sanctions on persons helping Iran import refined petroleum products or contributing to Iran´s ability to develop its petroleum resources. H.R. 2194 was passed overwhelmingly by the House of Representatives on December 15, 2009. This week, the Senate adopted S. 2799, the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2009.
