Classic Championship Wrestling - Event Wrap-up 9.19.06

Thomas Keister
As a mild sixties evening reminded us that fall was right around the corner, the seats weren't empty for long as the CCW faithful quickly took to their chairs, hotly anticipating the final show of a very successful summer for Classic Championship Wrestling. With the conclusion of the First Round and the beginning of the Quarterfinals in the CCW Heavyweight title tournament, as well as two big tag team matches on tap, the fans were sure to get their ticket's worth once again.

Elmore Fudd (w/Elma Fudd) vs. Brandon Scott: Fudd was back in action this week, looking to regroup after a tough first round tournament loss with a strong showing against impressive CCW prospect Brandon Scott, making his singles debut in CCW after making a splash a few weeks ago in six-man tag team action teaming with The Fat and Furious. Fudd, playing on Scott's inexperience, went to wear down the rookie early, showing perhaps a bit of scouting work by focusing on Scott's previously injured arm. As always, where the ref's attention is missing, Mrs. Fudd can be found, and together, the duo made every attempt to put Scott down for the count, if not for a few more weeks, as displayed by Fudd's intensity. Catching a second wind, Scott began a comeback that looked as though it hurt him more than it hurt Fudd, although the momentum was clearly in Scott's favor at this point. Fudd would ultimately score the pin, hitting a bulldog to best the rookie in a hard-fought match.

K-Lo & Guido Andretti (w/Ricky Stonewall) vs. Rocco Andretti & The Regulator (w/Tim the Baker): The second bout of the evening featured a rematch from last week, as "The Illustrious" K-Lo and Guido Andretti hit the ring with newly-hired manager Ricky Stonewall, looking to make it two in a row against The Regulator and Rocco Andretti, once again seconded by the ever-present Tim the Baker. After the breakdown in communication last week, neither man looked too sure about their new found moral support.

Employing a bit of mind game at the bell, K-Lo and Guido definitely looked to control the pace of the match early on. I said I liked their aggressiveness alongside Ricky Stonewall last week, and this week would prove to be no exception. This is without a doubt the dark horse tag team in CCW at present. While K-Lo opened trying to grind down Regulator, the big man wasn't buying and K-Lo soon found the tables turned on him. Referee James Hardin had his hands more than full, seeing as neither teams' members have widespread reputations as angels in the ring. As Rocco and Regulator took solid control of the match, K-Lo was battered from corner to corner until a stroke of timing allowed a reversal of fortune. Rocco then became the subject of punishment from both opponents as well as Stonewall, who is obviously a big fan of "hands-on creative guidance." Several near-falls spoke volumes to the toughness of Rocco Andretti, running on fumes and instinct as he managed to escape and tag The Regulator back in. Chaos would result, and in the confusion, Tim the Baker wound up AWOL from his team's corner, chased to the back, leading to the downfall of Rocco and Regulator as Stonewall's chair-swinging assistance led to a second straight win for the refocused K-Lo and Guido Andretti.

CCW Heavyweight Title tournament, QUARTERFINALS: Dynamite Derrick vs. Jebidiah Blackhawk: Dynamite Derrick, whether or not anyone like it, was back in Portland, and more importantly, in the Quarterfinal Round. While he may have been more prepared for his opponent this week, it still left a bit of room for speculation, as Jebidiah Blackhawk has never been labeled a pushover. While championship gold may have been on his mind, more than a little bit of Blackhawk looked to take some of the steam out of "The Old School Player's" arrogant (if successful) streak as of late.

It was Blackhawk, in fact, who went old school early, grounding Derrick with submission and grappling holds, effectively neutralizing the speed factor as well. While Derrick would threaten to take control, Blackhawk quickly recovered, continuing to apply headlocks, armbars, and impact moves. A missed high-risk move opened the door for Derrick to go on the offensive, which was a relentless attack on the right leg of Blackhawk. Fans of late have often made the mistake of underestimating Dynamite Derrick, due to their anger over his change of heart, but the fact remains he is an outstanding mat worker. The attack on Blackhawk's leg culminated in a figure four that nearly gained the win for Derrick. Derrick knew a win here would put him a mere win away from the CCW Championship Final, although he would go to the well one time too many. As both men struggled to their feet, Derrick would connect with the Supa Playa Kick, although he was unable to capitalize. Controversy continues to follow Dynamite Derrick on his quest for the gold, as a low blow under the ref's radar and a pin gained by leveraging the ropes sealed a trip to the Semi Finals for Derrick. Can't condone the methods, although I also can't argue the results. Keep an eye on Derrick, folks, he's not done yet, not by a longshot.

Vito Andretti of the Fat 'N The Furious and the lovely Miss Hollywood then mingled with the fans during a brief intermission. The crowd clearly enjoys the chance to interact with the stars of CCW, notably Vito Andretti, who enjoys some of the most widespread popularity in the promotion today.

Bad Medicine #6 & #9 vs. The Fat 'N The Furious: In-ring action resumed as the Bad Medicines returned to CCW after a reported tour to the wilds of Tiajuana, where they perform free clinic work in-between gigs, looking to best The Fat 'N The Furious. While the Bad Medicines may have been fresh off a two-week stint in the vacation capital of the world, they seemed to be experiencing a bit of bus lag in getting started in this match. Jack Black and Vito Andretti were firing on all cylinders from the word "go" as they inflicted damage at will upon the masked men, including the world-famous Greasy Elbow.

Clearly overwhelmed, the Bad Medicines tried to regroup on the outside, but that would prove to be easier said than done. An eye rake by Bad Medicine #9 allowed them to get back into the match. With a head of steam, the Bad Medicines can brawl with the best of them, although their win-loss record in CCW may not accurately reflect that fact. The strategy turned to the lower back of Andretti. After absorbing a beatdown only the Bad Medicines could dish out, he managed to tag Black in, who simply put, went sickhouse on both men, ending the match with a vulgar display of power, nailing the Fatliner on both Bad Medicines simultaneously!

Without further adieu, K-Lo returned to the ring, with Guido Andretti and Ricky Stonewall in tow as usual, demanding CCW Commissioner Chris Alexander's presence. Quickly obliging, Alexander was then met with the demand of Ricky Stonewall that Kliff Hanger, K-Lo's Quarterfinal opponent, be brought out a week early for their match. Giving both Stonewall and the fans what they wanted, Alexander called out "The Black Redneck," who had borrowed some ring gear to answer the impromptu challenge.

CCW Heavyweight Title tournament, QUARTERFINALS: K-Lo vs. Kliff Hanger: Hitting the ring with a vengeance, Kliff Hanger brought a full-tilt fight to K-Lo. Senior Offical Darrell Mays struggled to maintain control as K-Lo's smash mouth style turned the tide and looked to be leading to a Semi Final round reward at various points. Kliff Hanger would rebound, but K-Lo's partners-in-crime had plans to sneak another win out of the CCW Arena for the evening. Stonewall and Andretti's interference would backfire, as Kliff Hanger not only won the impromptu match, but fulfilled my earlier prediction of appearing in the Semi Final round, where he will face off against Dynamite Derrick. Expect nothing short of excellence here.

CCW Heavyweight Title tournament, FIRST ROUND: "Smooth" Johnny Spade vs. Apollo: The evening's main event officially brought the first round of the CCW Title tournament to a close, as Apollo was on the hunt for a big opening round win over "Smooth" Johnny Spade. Apollo had his usual rhetoric for the fans in the house, including not only predicting his win over Spade, but all but declaring himself the future CCW Heavyweight Champion.

Spade, returning to action following the loss of his father last week, thanked the fans for their support as well as dedicating the match to his father. While Apollo tried to start out strong, Spade was on fire, lighting up Apollo with chops and hard right hands, even landing The Spade Elbow for good measure. Apollo wasn't about to let Spade by without a fight, and before the five-minute mark had passed, both men looked as though they had been through five miles of hell in one mile's time. No sooner than he had regained control, Spade fell victim to a missed splash, one again turning the tide in Apollo's favor. A vicious spike DDT barely missed putting Spade away, showing the desire Spade brought into the ring for this match-up.

Fate seemed to be turning against Spade, as he would collide with Senior Official Darrell Mays, leaving the door open for Dynamite Derrick to run out with a chair. Miss Hollywood hit ringside at the same time, stopping Derrick from taking out Spade with a chair. While Derrick was considering what to do to Miss Hollywood for her intervention, Spade would make the save. Apollo might have taken advantage of the timing, but all that got him for his efforts was a chair superkicked back into his face by Spade. One Spadeton later, and "Smooth" Johnny Spade was on his way to the Quarterfinals. Tournament or no tournament, another in-ring collision between these two is inevitable. Just hope you have the night off when that one gets booked.

As the chase for the CCW Championship continues and stars look to take their place at the top of the ladder, and not only in singles action as more mention is made of crowning CCW Tag Team Champions, the good news is fans can expect the best in pro wrestling action each and every week at the CCW Arena.
