Are the New York Jets a team of Destiny? - MVPGotham

NEW YORK, NY -- Whatīs the old adage of defense winning championships? Itīs safe to say that the 2009 iteration of the New York Jets buy into that one. Itīs not a real surprise that the Jets would be built on a staunch defense, and a run first, run second, run third, and then run some more offense considering who

their head coach is.

Rex Ryan spent his longest tenure as an NFL coach with the Baltimore Ravens, a franchise that has built its legacy on defense and a power running attack. Ryan spent 2005-2008 as the Ravensī defensive coordinator, and last season as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Heīs brought what he saw worked under former Baltimore head coaches John Harbaugh and of course, arguably the best head coach in Baltimoreīs history, Brian Billick. Billick brought Baltimore itīs only Super Bowl victory, and demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that defense can indeed win championships.

Thatīs why itīs no surprise that the 2009 New York Jets can be realistically compared to the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. While that Ravens team was a team for the ages, putting up defensive numbers that were rarely seen before, and havenīt been seen since. That team also posted a better record than this yearīs Jets, going 12-4 but they too were a wild card entry. The Jets tied for the worst record of any team making the playoffs this season, ironically sharing the 9-7 mark with the Baltimore Ravens.
