9/11 TERRORISM, MOTIVATION AND LEARNING

Imran Khan
After the horrific incident of 9/11/2001 the world has seen several changes. America declared a war against terrorism, its policies have been changed and use of power is more evident after 9/11. Many things which USA has never done are in practice whether they conflict with international laws are not. Like Guantanamo prison, secret flights, secret prisons etc.

The world stood with United States when it attacked the Afghanistan to topple Taliban and Al-Qaeda soon after 9/11. But it was not the case when USA tried to get the same support from the world when it was willing to invade Iraq in 2003. But USA did go at war with Iraq and ended the Saddam Hussein’s rule with force. US believed that Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and was supporting terrorists. Though nothing have been proved yet.

United States claim that with the use of power Al-Qaeda network has been destroyed significantly. But still Al-Qaeda is considered very powerful. Its top leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman Al-Zawahri are still free and Al-Qaeda’s hand was visible in many attacks after 9/11 like in Bali 2002, Madrid 2004 and London 2005. On going strong insurgency in Iraq is also linked with Al-Qaeda. So it’s clear that only use of power is not enough to tackle the issue. Indeed there is a need to analyze things deeply. Why 9/11 incident occurred? Why there is a big gap between east and west? Where people are getting motivation to carry out these kinds of attacks and why? When few Muslims carried out those acts they were motivated to do so in the name of Islam. There comes the thinking point from where they get motivation to kill.

When someone alone watches a bad incident then he may feel huge grief/ anger in his heart. But when someone tries to inspire others with any particular incident then the nature of the grief/ anger may be different. Motivation is a big force to achieve something and it could be used in any way. Everyone agrees that killing of civilians on 9/11 was very bad thing. But if someone had asked the persons who carried out those attacks, probably they would have said look thousands of civilians have been killed by Israel and USA always supporting them. Why UNO’s resolutions have not been applied for more than 50 years? Why Israel occupied Palestine territories? That could be the motivation for them to act in such a way which resulted so badly for innocents.

In some place some where a person may gather people and tells them about the use of thousands of cluster bombs by Israel on civilian areas. Giving it an emotional touch that every day innocent children are still being killed by those bombs though fight is over and it will take many years to clean. United States has provided the bombs to Israel. Emotions could run high and that may convince them that they killing our innocent people let kill their also. Someone may be using Iraq situation to inspire others. If before 9/11 Israel – Palestine issue was a big source of motivation to kill but now there are many new issues which someone could use for their propose. With this kind of motivation many may be ready to join the ranks of Al-Qaeda.

Terrorism will never be ended with force only. Even after 5 years of 9/11 learning about each others is much needed. The fight against terrorism and extremism would be only won when conflicting issues like Philistine, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kashmir etc will be solved with justice. The laws must be equal for everyone. Terrorism is Terrorism and who ever carry it out should be punished. Then peace would prevail and people will come close to each other. Issues needed to be addressed so that no one could be able to use them to motivate others to kill anyone.
