Sen. George Allen: In Deep Macaca

Robert Paul Reyes
Politicians often appeal to the baser instincts, but Americans are fundamentally decent and are turned off by dirty politics.

Sen. George Allen had learned this truth to his great dismay, the good people of Virginia have turned against him since he made a racist remark to an American of Indian descent.

A politician who displays the Confederate flag in his home and calls a minority a “monkey”, should be in deep Macaca.

Allen’s “Macaca Moment” was not an aberration, the fact is that throughout his career Allen has fraternized with those who promote racist ideas, such as the Council of Conservative Citizens.

Democratic Senate candidate Jim Webb has nearly erased an imposing lead Republican Sen. George Allen held just a few weeks ago, according to an independent statewide poll published Sunday.

Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. found 46 percent of those interviewed supported Allen and 42 percent backed Webb. Twelve percent were undecided.

The “Macaca Incident” has made even diehard conservatives rethink their support of George Allen.

The state of Virginia should send a clear and resounding message this November: We are a progressive southern state and we don’t take kindly to racist politicians.

Jim Webb is a decent man that everyone in Virginia can be proud of, he would make a worthy senator.
