Does the US have any International Friends Left?

DL Ennis
It is looking more and more, with each passing day that the US is without friends in the international community. With the EU in negotiations with Iran and claiming to have made progress, yet unable to show this progress in any article I have read, it’s looking like they are trying to secure their interest in trade with Iran at the expense of the US.

Reuters is reporting in their article “Moves mulled after upbeat Iran-EU talks” by Mark Heinrich that:

Six world powers will weigh strategy toward Iran's disputed nuclear activity on Monday after hints of Iranian readiness to compromise in talks with the EU, which could blunt a U.S. push to hit Tehran with sanctions.”

after hints of Iranian readiness to compromise in talks with the EU…” What compromise could they be talking about? Iran has already said, and continues to say when asked if Iran would concede to suspending its uranium enrichment activities for short and temporary periods of time, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Hamid Reza Asefi underscored, "Tehran may not accept even a short-term suspension of its enrichment activities, the issue with suspension belongs to the past." He added, "We do not return to the past, and the issue of suspension does not constitute the context of the nuclear talks."

Bush has said that we cannot accept anything short of Iran ending its uranium enrichment activities completely. So, in relation to US concerns…where is the progress? Clearly the progress is not in convincing Iran to stop uranium enrichment!

The FARS News Agency is reporting that:

Describing the Saturday talks between Iran's Chief Nuclear Negotiator Ali Larijani and EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana as positive and constructive, he said such negotiations are aimed at converging the two sides' view points.” "At present Solana is provided with a good opportunity which he can take advantage of, depending on his sense of appreciation of time, his possibilities, and his expert views away from all the political motives at work," he continued.”

The diplomat expressed the hope that Solana-Larijani talks which are continued also on Sunday would yield fruits desirable to both parties.”

The talks “…would yield fruits desirable to both parties.” Doesn’t sound to me like the EU is looking out for the interest of the US or the World but instead what seems best for the EU at this time!

Iran's Chief Nuclear Negotiator Ali Larijani also said that:

"We are presently having separate negotiations with both European and non-European countries, including China, Russia and the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and the only thing which matters to us is continuing negotiations until achievement of desirable results." He also stated that many European countries have voiced support for Iran's nuclear stances. "Many EU states have not only approved of Iran's peaceful nuclear activities, but also voiced support for our programs and activities in the domain of the nuclear technology."

Canada, Japan and Italy have also joined in negations with Iran. The US seems to have no friends when it comes to this issue and I am afraid that we will find that the friends we have lost on this one will work against us from now own.
