It's Complicated: A Movie Review

This past Christmas day I wanted to do something unique. I noticed that the movie It´s Complicated starring Meryl Street, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin was debuting at the local theatre. I downloaded the IMDb application onto my iPhone and searched for the times and places. I found the nearest 16 theatre Regal nearby and set out to see the 4:10pm show.

It was a six mile drive to the Regal 16 in Port Charlotte, Florida from Punta Gorda where I reside. The parking lot at the mall was largely deserted because it was Christmas day. However, the parking lot near the theatre was packed with cars and people coming and going to the various shows. We parked and made our way inside.

The lobby where you purchase tickets was an ant hill of activity. The roster of what was showing when read more like the arrivals and departures at the airport than the theatre. I noticed that Avatar was sold out up until the 7pm showing and it was also showing in two theatres. The earlier show for It´s Complicated had also been sold out. As we stood in line I hoped we would be able to secure tickets to the 4:10 show, which thankfully we did.

Next we went inside to locate which theatre it was being shown in. Theatre 9. Then we went to get some popcorn with extra butter and a large Sprite to sustain us through the show. By the time we actually got into theatre 9 most of the seats were already taken and there was still about 10 minutes before it was scheduled to begin. We found two vacant seats and sat down.

The first half hour before the movie was shown was taken up with previews of other movies and commercials---yes, you got me right commercials. I could not believe there were actually commercials for Old Navy and Radio Shack being played along with the previews.

Anyway, eventually the lights dimmed and the movie began. I had seen the previews and liked the stars roles so I sort of expected a pretty good show. Like many real life divorces the one between Alec and Meryl was no less spectacular in that there was the usual hurt and deception that over a long period of time had healed, but perhaps not been entirely forgiven. When the two find themselves in unusual and singular circumstances for the graduation of one of their three children all bets are off.

Meryl and Alec have not dined alone in the ten years they have been divorced, but they do now and they actually have a very good time. Many drinks later they find themselves together in bed. What to do now? Is this a fling? A one night stand? Or the beginning or a new chapter together?

Steve Martin complicates matters between Meryl and Alec. Meryl is somewhat drawn to Steve, he is her architect in a new renovation project, and he is recently divorced/lost so she is kind of therapy for him too. They embark on a date and have a great time. Alec becomes jealous and sets out to win back Meryl, but will he succeed?

The characters are wonderfully complex and extremely well cast in their roles. The story is funny and interesting. The romance is so well done that you almost feel like you are there with them as the story unfolds. I would recommend this to all couples who have ever been divorced and remarried, especially those with grown children leaving the nest.
