Are the Blind leading the Blind?
And all the while it is certainly public knowledge that the team behind the Bush plans had intended to strike Iraq years prior to the 9/11 attacks. Everyone knows that, if they will only take the time to read the Project for the New American Century or (PNAC) reports. They were published first in 1997 and then again in 2000. No deep dark secret here. And most of the Bush team were members of PNAC!
In 1997 their established goals were to remind the American people that as the 20th century draws to a close, the United States stands as the world's preeminent power. Having led the West to victory in the Cold War, America faces an opportunity and a challenge: Does the United States have the vision to build upon the achievements of past decades? Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests?
They stated bluntly that the United States must be prudent in how it exercises its power. But we cannot safely avoid the responsibilities of global leadership or the costs that are associated with its exercise. America has a vital role in maintaining peace and security in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Their aim was to remind us of the lessons of the past and to draw their consequences for today. Here are four consequences:
We need to increase defense spending significantly if we are to carry out our global responsibilities today and modernize our armed forces for the future;
We need to strengthen our ties to democratic allies and to challenge regimes hostile to our interests and values;
We need to promote the cause of political and economic freedom abroad;
We need to accept responsibility for America's unique role in preserving and extending an international order friendly to our security, our prosperity, and our principles.
Then later in their White Paper produced in September of 2000 entitled "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century." In it, PNAC outlines what is required of America to create the global empire they envision. According to PNAC, America must:
Reposition permanently based forces to Southern Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East;
Modernize U.S. forces, including enhancing our fighter aircraft, submarine and surface fleet capabilities;
Develop and deploy a global missile defense system, and develop a strategic dominance of space;
Control the "International Commons" of cyberspace;
Increase defense spending to a minimum of 3.8 percent of gross domestic product, up from the 3 percent currently spent.
Why do we blindly follow the leadership of these men who had such grandiose plans of world domination years prior to 9/11 and simply used those events to instill fear in our hearts and minds to carry out their sinister plans?
