The Feminist Movement Did Not Ruin Women

Judy Ramsook
It seems evident that some women believe the feminist movement forever ruined women or the way women are supposed to function in society, this writer disagrees.

There may not have been a strong feminist movement during the American civil war, but still, who was left in charge of the home while the men were busy on the battle fields?

Women were. If their husbands’ lives were met with fatal results, their function went over and beyond the household and child rearing chores. They also had to find a way to maintain that home and family by seeking out employment.

Something which could have been a little difficult if one had to find a babysitter to manage those preschool babes while the mother went out and worked. Another thing that has changed over tine is people.

Contrary to a popular saying, no man or economy is created equal. Just because one’s great grand father, grand father or father did a solid job of maintaining stability on the home front, does not necessarily mean that another man from a much modern era can do the same. Times and the economy have changed.

There is hardly any on the job security these days. Even if one is self employed, he/she has to rely on his/her clientele or customers to make a living.

If those customers find a better product or less expensive service elsewhere, they too will be gone. Let’s face it. Anyone who lives in a developed or developing country knows it would require a two income salary to make it.

If a woman is fortunate enough to marry a man who is a millionaire, fine, that might mean she would not have to seek out employment to help him give them a better life. Do not short change the other women though; the ones who want to work for their own personal reasons.

Not all women want to stay at home 24/7 all year long taking care of the home. After the kids are old enough to attend school, she, the woman, might want to spend some of that free time on herself for a change.

For some of us are products of our environment. Not many modern women might want to live the stay at home, non independent life their female ancestors did.

The feminist movement did not ruin anyone. Any responsible, intelligent person knows pretty well that people can ruin themselves without needing an excuse or a movement to assist them along that route.

If anything, the feminist movement motivated those women who wanted a little independence to go out and get some independence.

Another important thing that emerged as a result of the feminist movement? Women finally got the right to vote, for they need to be heard to, don’t you think? All the better since they serve such an important function in society.
