House Training For Puppy - Busy Owner's Guide
Super Busy at Work All Day? No Problem
First, if you're gone for most of the day, your best bet is to paper train your puppy. Also, you've got to keep your puppy confined while you're at work. It's going to be harder to paper train your puppy on a limited schedule, but it can be done.
You just need to put plenty of extra time in before work and after work and on your days off. You can also take some vacation time off since it takes typically 2-3 weeks for a puppy to get into a good routine.
House Training for Puppy Step 1
There are three methods to train your puppy. But you should only use one and stick to it. I recommend using the indoor method. Confine your puppy to a small room with a tile floor or linoleum floor.
This is so that the stains don't get absored and it's easy to clean. This room should have newspaper or toilet training pads on one side, food, water and plenty of toys and chew things and bedding on another.

Don't let your dog have run of the house. If you do, your puppy will have "accidents." Of course, all puppies have accidents but the problem is that once they pee in an area, they'll go back to that area. So make sure she's confined to one area of the house until she's fully house trained.
House Training for Puppy Step 3
Another option is to have a dog walker or sitter come throughout the day to help with the training. You can even have a family member help you do it. The most important thing is that both of you be on the same exact page as to what type of training you'll give the dog.
House Training for Puppy Step 4
Forget about crate training if you're going to be gone for long periods of time. Puppies should only be kept in a crate for 2 hours at a time. If kept in longer, they will poop in their crate, making them very uncomfortable.
The crate should be their sanctuary. So if they see their crate as a place of discomfort, they won't go in. Also, puppies have uncontrollable bladders. The only time you should use a crate is when you're at home and can't keep a vigilant eye on her. Or during bed time. Then, you should keep the crate next to your bed.
House Training for Puppy Step 5
Never punish your dog if you come home to find that she has soiled off the newspaper. If you punish her, she won't even know why she's being punished. Any corrections given to puppies should be within 5 seconds of the "offense."
Even then, all you have to do is say, "No" in a firm voice. When you come home, simply ignore the dog and quickly clean up the mess using an appropriate cleaner and pet odor neutralizer.
Most importantly, do all you can to ensure that you can allocate two to three weeks, as a family if possible, to the schedule that has been devised for house training your dog.
