I've decided to write this article, "House Training a Puppy - Tips for New Puppy Owners" because so many new puppy owners make the same house training mistakes. Subsequently, they all have the same house training problems.

Are you a new puppy owner desperately trying to keep your dog from having accidents in the house? Are you confused about which house training method to use? The purpose of this article, "House Training a Puppy - Tips for New Puppy Owners" is to give you solutions to those problems and recommend solutions to other house training problems.

The #1 Problem For New Puppy Owners

The #1 problem puppy owners have is house training. Let me explain what "house training" means. House training means teaching your pet where to urinate (pee) and defecate (poop) either outside or on paper in a certain area inside your house.

Choosing the Right Method is Important

In order to be successful in house training your puppy, you've got to choose the right method. There are three methods to train your puppy:

1. Indoor

2. Direct (outdoor)

3. Crate Training

I always recommend the indoor method for new puppy owners. Why? The training is quicker, it's cost effective (you're using newspaper), the clean up is easy, and if you're on the go all the time, you don't have to worry about stepping into a pile of poop when you open your apartment door.

Once you've chosen the right method, it's time to start house training. How do you start house training a puppy (tips I'm about to give you will save you a time and money)?

Know When Your Puppy Needs to Eliminate

Once you've decided which method to use (hopefully you've chosen the indoor method) you need to know when most likely your puppy will have to go potty. Here are the times your puppy will need to go potty:

1. Upon awakening

2. 10-20 minutes after eating a meal

3. After being highly active

4. Right before bed

Set up a Strict Schedule

New puppies sleep a lot. Here is an example of a schedule for a one month old puppy:

Schedule for Puppy

7am Puppy wakes – outside for Toilet

9am First meal then toilet

11am Sleeps

1pm Second meal then toilet

3pm Sleeps

5pm Play time then toilet

7pm Third meal then toilet

9pm Sleeps

11pm Toilet visit before bed
