Radical Islamists Behead Newspaper Editor
A gang of armed men abducted career journalist Mohammed Taha from his home on Tuesday night, according to al-Wifaq, the newspaper for which Taha worked.
No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, but authorities suspect hardline Islamic groups, according to Associated Press.
Taha ran the pro-government al-Wifaq paper. He was tried for blasphemy after the paper printed an article questioning the lineage of the prophet Muhammad. Thousands of people gathered outside a courtroom during Taha's trial last year and called for the editor's death, according to AP.
After several dramatic days, the charges were dropped.
Under Sharia law, if Taha had been found guilty of blasphemy, he could have been executed. Sudan has been governed by the strict Islamic law since 1993.
