Classic Championship Wrestling - Event Wrap-up 9.5.06
The card kicked off with Elmore Fudd (accompanied by Mrs. Fudd) teaming with Matt Back, the mysterious masked man, to face the team of Jebidiah Blackhawk and “Smooth” Johnny Spade. At the beginning, Fudd and Back found themselves outnumbered, at least in the moral support department, as Blackhawk and Spade combined their already impressive fan base to rattle the walls with cheering upon arrival. The momentum carried through the opening bell, as Spade and Blackhawk were in clear control. As with any match involving Elmore Fudd, his wife's presence makes the numbers game a factor, more so than the will of the fans, as the trio took advantage of several moments baiting Spade into the ring, double-teaming, triple-teaming, and firing cheap shots at Blackhawk. However, after perhaps taking one chance too many, a missed elbow from the middle ropes was the chance Blackhawk needed to bring his partner into the match. Fudd & Back were quickly overrun by the comeback, punctuated by a Spadeton, allowing Spade to score the win, pinning Back. Spade, unarguably the hottest star in CCW at present, is refusing to slow down even an iota as the main thought in the locker rooms surrounds the heavyweight championship. Even if you are not a gambler, put a couple bucks down on Spade in this one, folks. May not be as profitable as a Powerball ticket, but you gotta admit, it is a hell of a lot more fun than watching them draw the numbers on TV.
The tournament itself kicked off the First Round with “The Illustrious” K-Lo, now represented by the ever-present Tim the Baker, looking to add to the luster with a win to advance over CCW's own Commissioner, Chris Alexander. Alexander, no stranger to having gold around his waist, definitely had the same idea in mind, pulling a few tricks from his sleeve that may have belied his status as part of the law and order in CCW. It was a sound strategy in a back-and-forth match that left the fans on the edge of their seats. Gaining the edge, K-Lo then went on the offensive, using impact moves to try and out away the commish. Unfortunately for Alexander, wherever K-Lo and Tim the Baker are, you can rest assured Guido Andretti is not too far behind, as Andretti landed a cheap shot while Tim the Baker was running interference. Three seconds later, K-Lo was the first man to reach the Second Round.
Speaking of ever-present, Tim the Baker was back for the very next match, as he was looking to go 2-for-2 in the First Round with Guido Andretti drawing “The Black Redneck” Kliff Hanger in the bracket. Kliff Hanger, who by now should be accustomed to bringing the house down at the CCW Arena, was kept busy from the word go, as Tim the Baker's numbers game was once again in full force. Andretti had things firmly in his favor. As the match wore on, Kliff Hanger would mount a serious comeback, only to suffer an attack from K-Lo as he went for the pin. While he may have advanced to the second round via a disqualification, you can be sure there will be some form of payback on down the road for Tim the Baker and his stable.
As the intermission gave way to the second half of the show, The Regulator, hailing from Detroit, made his CCW debut against Matt Maverick. While Maverick has a fine track record for an up-and-comer, size, strength, and experience looked to be factors favoring The Regulator, who took Maverick from corner-to-corner-to-corner, dishing out some brutal chops. While Maverick would quickly return the favor, his opponent would regain control, punishing Maverick with a brawling attack in and outside the ring. After several near falls, the frustration would start to build for the veteran from the Motor City, leading him to take far too long in attempting a middle-rope legdrop. Maverick, sensing the opportunity at hand, looked for much the same impact, only to be caught on the top rope. This was the opening The Regulator had been waiting for, and a big flapjack later, The Regulator saw his hand raised for a victory in his Classic Championship Wrestling debut.
Commissioner Chris Alexander then hit the ring to give the fans a preview of the Bunkhouse Brawl main event, only to be quickly interrupted by Apollo and The Prophet. Apollo, not only one of CCW's most outspoken competitors, but the loudest as well, took issue with the "Fans Choose the Weapon" stipulation on the match. While Alexander made it more than clear to both men they had no choice in the matter, Vito Andretti's suggestion that they use ALL the weapons in the match drew the biggest reaction of the night from the crowd, still recovering from the Portland Street Fight from last week. The Fat and The Furious have shown no sign of slowing down in their quest to shut not only the HNIC, but The Prophet up for good, and the main event of the evening was well on its way to topping the violence and mayhem from the week before.
The final First Round tournament match of the evening saw Dynamite Derrick, a clear favorite in this tournament, love or hate him, starting his quest for gold against Biff Wellington III. Once again, the CCW Arena temporarily became a frat house bash, as BW3 hit the ring to a rousing ovation, accompanied by the flat-gorgeous Miss Hollywood. However, an unexpected turn of events was right around, or more to the point, right off the corner, as Wellington would suffer what appeared to be a serious knee injury shortly after entering the ring. This was a crushing blow to Wellington, whose passion for competition is just as strong as his popularity with the fans. Dynamite Derrick, assuming his night was over before it began, returned to the backstage area, no doubt already plotting out his Second Round strategy. This would turn out to be slightly premature on Derrick's part, as "The Golden Greek" John Tolos III, a masked frat brother of Wellington's, stepped up to take his place. Dynamite Derrick was not happy at all about being called back out for action, but Chris Alexander quickly informed him that he was not about to "simply slide by" in the tournament. Tolos was up to the challenge, giving Dynamite Derrick a run for his money on a couple of occasions in the match. A missed top rope elbow drop from Derrick provided the fuel for a comeback by the masked Greek, looking to score what could only be called an upset win in defense of his fallen frat brother. In classic Dynamite Derrick style, however, the Supa Playa Kick is always a split second away from launch, and connecting on Tolos' jaw resulted in Derrick moving onto the Second Round with a pinfall win over his replacement opponent.
As Derrick has also shown in the past several weeks, the end of the match does not mean the end of the story, as he then cornered Miss Hollywood. The intentions were clear, even if nobody really knew what was on the arrogant superstar's mind. Enter then "Smooth" Johnny Spade, who made the save, then reminding Derrick that the potential for a Final Round showdown for the CCW Championship was there. You could have sworn Spade was literally licking his chops at the thought of getting his hands on Derrick again, especially in a title match situation. If that match does in fact happen, the fans may fill the CCW Arena beyond the bursting point, as this would be a Match of the Year lock in most any federation you could follow.
The Main Event of the evening was now upon us. As predicted and as expected, the HNIC and The Prophet were more than ready to face the Fat and The Furious, teaming once again with rookie sensation Brandon Scott, and the chaos was on. Both teams amped up the brutality from the street fight a week before, as even more weapons were employed this time around, including golf clubs, wrenches, and even a fire extinguisher took turns inflicting as much damage as possible on the six men. Within a mere ten minutes, not only the ring, but all six men involved looked as though they had been on long trip through a short war. While the Fat and The Furious' Vito Andretti and Jack Black, as well as The Prophet and HNIC's Apollo and JB Thunder are no strangers to hardcore action, Brandon Scott seems to be handling his "baptism by fire" as he held his own once again in the face of angry and determined veteran grapplers, scoring a pinfall on JB Thunder for the second time in three weeks.
At this point, Scott's luck ran out, as the fallen opponents continued the assault, handcuffing the FNF to the ropes, brutalizing them as well as focusing on the rookie, destroying his arm by placing it inside a chair and smashing it several times with another. While the HNIC and The Prophet may have be on the short end of the stick thus far in the feud, they left Portland Tuesday night secure in the fact they have neutralized one factor in the rivalry. Scott, who left the arena with his arm slinged, was not in much mood to comment, although I expect he will have plenty to say when action resumes next week.
With the CCW Heavyweight Title tournament now in full swing and the action getting hotter and hotter each and every week, my advice to the crowds pouring in on Tuesday evenings is make sure all your business is taken care of once the first bell rings, cause you don't dare turn your attention away for even a second, lest you miss the fastest-growing wrestling promotion in the Kentuckiana area.
