Christmas awakens the spiritual quest in each one of us. The atmosphere is fragrant with the mystic of celebration and all of us rejoice in good cheer. India being a secular nation, Christmas is celebrated with equal pomp and spirit in all the states. As the month of December begins, people begin to renovate their house and also make elaborate preparations in sprucing their decor.

This is also homecoming for people who are abroad and children look forward for much merriment. For a child, Santa and gifts are inseparable. Along with the hymns and carols they enjoy 'Rudolph the reindeer' and sing the same with much gusto. The pleasure of having friends and family together sets in the perfect time to plan a more fabulous time for the New Year's Eve. Parties have the perfect culinary mix of the east and west cuisine.

People of all religions partake in the spirit of Christmas and also attend the midnight mass. It is great to watch so many families unitedly expressing their spirituality. The serene night of the birth of Christ is divine. Exchanging sweets and special home made cookies marks the spirit of Christmas and the grand feast is made with great detail.

The Christmas week in India is more enjoyable as this seems the annual vacation time in schools and colleges. People make prior arrangements for local visits and they look forward eagerly to plan for the Christmas party. Irrespective of religion, the Christmas star is hung in most homes and decorating the tree becomes a passion for everyone in the family.


Adorning the Christmas tree is enjoyable with so many ready made decorative items available in the market. One can actually feel the joy experienced by the child is receiving the gifts by 'Santa' which is wrapped with lot of love by parents and kept in the stocking. Games, potluck parties, designer clothing, jewelry pieces and hand made gifts makes Christmas great in India.

Winter weddings especially in Christmas are enjoyable with the nip in the air wafting a sweet sense of romance and party spirit. Designers bring out their unique creations and this is a great time for shopping in India. Extending the humane hand, Christmas time in India is also a time for charity and taking care of the needs of our underprivileged brethren. Donating clothes, toys and distributing sweets is the sign of expressing our care for the needy.
