Cellulite Causes and Solutions Discovered with New Technology

Looking at Grey’s Anatomy, there is no entry for “cottage cheese”. Still this is how millions of women would describe the dimpled flesh surrounding their buttocks and thighs.

While cellulite tops the list of cosmetic antagonists the question remains, “What is cellulite and is there is cellulite cure?”

After decades of calling adipose (fat) tissue “orange-peeled skin”, researchers from the National Research Council in Canada used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to examine cellulite and determine its true composition.

Such investigations increase our understanding of the anatomical nature of the body’s fatty tissue and guide us to more definitive cellulite therapies.

If you think your cellulite solution will involve a fat cure, you’re right. With MRI, investigators found that cellulite results when the fat layer meshes into the upper layers of the skin.

Similarly, investigators from L’Oréal-Advanced research labs in France took a three-dimensional look at the body’s adipose tissue again using MRI technology.

They confirmed the findings of the Canadian team while adding that the increase of the fat layer in women contributes to the presence of cellulite. Moreover, the French findings did not link cellulite to water retention.

Ironically, while we know what cellulite is, a permanent cellulite "cure" remains mythical.

For instance, a 2004 study published in the Journal Of Cosmetic Laser Therapy determined that there is no cellulite panacea in existence- including mesotherapy and laser treatments for cellulite.

The study considered the four factors typically implicated in causing cellulite:

    1. Skin thickness based on sex (collagen reduction)

    2. Structural changes in the skin

    3. Changes in blood flow and vascular health and

    4. Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s favorite bad guy- inflammation.

In the end, if you want a cellulite solution, focus on fat reduction, because according to the MRIs, fat is literally at the root of your cellulite cure.

Before you sulk, “But there’s some really skinny chicks with cellulite, so you can’t get rid of cellulite by losing fat!” read this:

Cellulite is not about body weight but your body fat percentage.

If you see a super skinny chick prancing around with thighs that wiggle like skyscrapers in an earthquake, that woman most likely has a high (30-35%) body fat percentage and relatively little supporting muscle tissue.

Certainly, using cellulite creams may help reduce the appearance of those nagging dimples, but science tells us that a cellulite cure requires fat reduction.

For example, this past August researchers from Wake Forest University published a report in the International Journal of Obesity that examined 45 obese, middle-aged women.

The investigators found that when the women combined aerobic activity with calorie reduction; they reduced the size of the adipocytes (fat cells) on in their abdominal and buttocks area.

So again the mundane yet effective advice to exercise and moderate your fat intake establishes itself again as the surest way to your ideal, cellulite-free body.
