The Godfather - Interview

I recently interviewed John Martino, who played the role of Paulie Gatto in the film "The Godfather."
Bell: Do you see any similarities between the role of Paulie Gatto, that you played in "The Godfather," and your own personal life?
Martino: The only similarity between my role and myself is that I am also an Italian from New York.
Bell: What were some of the most challenging scenes for you in "The Godfather" film and why?
Martino: I would have to say my death scene when they actually fired three real bullets past my head to make holes in the windshield to look realistic. It was also a challenge to work with such an incredible cast and crew.
Bell: Any behind the scenes or memorable moments on and off the set, during the filming of "The Godfather?"
Martino: During lunch breaks we would play baseball behind the house we used as the Don's house. Also, growing up, Marlon Brando was my idol. So, spending a day in the studio looping our voices was a memorable day.
Bell: What other movies have you been in? And what roles did you play in those movies?
Martino: I was in many movies, but the ones that I enjoyed the most, other than "The Godfather," was "Dillinger" with Warren Oates, in which I played Eddie; "Capone" with Sly Stalone, in which I played his right hand man Tony Amatto, and in "Truck Stop Woman" with Claudia Jennings, in which I played Smith. Recently I have worked on some SAG Independent films which I am excited about and also had the opportunity to be co- producer.
Bell: What other actors/actresses did you become acquainted with during your acting career?
Martino: When I first went to Hollywood and was a waiter I became friends with Marilyn Monroe. She would come into the restaurant every evening and I would walk her out to her car. Frank Sinatra, an incredible singer and actor, was always a favorite and I had the opportunity to meet him many times. Recently I was inspired to record an album "Memories of Old Blue eyes" with all his favorite songs.
Bell: Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?
Martino: I am very excited that The Godfather Game will be released soon. I have always felt so blessed to have been part of a classic movie and now to have the game coming out with its amazing animation is wonderful. I recently was in Little Italy in New York for a party with James Caan and Robert Duvall to celebrate the game, so I am looking forward to spending time with that amazing cast again.
I would like to thank John Martino for allowing me to interview him.
