California Redistricting Proposal Dies

A California judge ruled Thursday Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal for legislative redistricting cannot go on the state's ballot in November.
Sacramento Superior Court Judge Gail Ohanesian ruled in a legal challenge brought by California Attorney General Bill Lockyer that supporters of the initiative violated the state constitution by presenting the attorney general with an initiative that was worded differently from the one used in the petition drive to put the matter before voters in a referendum. Ohanesian said the differences were more than technical.
"Instead they go to the substantive terms of the measure," she said.
Supporters of Prop 77 indicated they would appeal the ruling.
Tom Presslar, a spokesman for Lockyer, said the attorney general felt confident he would win on appeal.
"We obviously made a good case to the judge," said Presslar, "and we look forward to making a good case to the next judge at the next level."
