Every kitchen designer has their own unique way of operating; however, most follow a lot of the same protocols and guidelines. The following are items may help in your preparation prior to meeting with your design professional, while also helping you to think about certain aspects of the project before you get started.

1. Make an Appointment – In the kitchen and bath cabinet industry you will find that most designers will prefer to have you meet with them in the showroom for your first appointment. This shows them that you have a serious interest and will allow you to see a large variety of design, colors, and styles. It is also useful for you to call ahead of time to schedule an appointment, because designers are often times with other customers or on the road getting measurements for existing clients.

2. Before your 1st meeting – Time is money and designers generally will give you an hour or two of their time before they need to move on to their next customer or project. Here are a few things you can do prior to your meeting that will help move the process along and make your time with the designer well worth it:

Bring in your Ideas – go through magazines and bring in clippings of kitchen styles and colors you like. This will help your designer to show you product that is similar to your tastes.

Likes and Dislikes – Think about what you like and dislike about your current kitchen. Talk with the designer about how you cook, clean, and eat. This will help your designer get a feel for how you operate in the kitchen, which in turn will allow them to give you guidance on appliances and kitchen layouts that will best fit your lifestyle.

Take Measurements – If your first meeting is taking place in the showroom you will need to bring in the rough measurements of the entire kitchen space. This will allow the kitchen designer to get a feel for the room, and begin your design.

Create a Budget – it is always a good idea to go into your first appointment with a projected budget. This will help your designer in highlighting product that will allow you to keep within your budget.

3. Design and Estimate – Once you complete your first visit you will most likely be called in a few days to come back in and look at a 3D rendering of your proposed kitchen as well as go over pricing. During this meeting you will refine the design and make changes. You may have to come in for several appointments until the layout and pricing are where you need them to be.

4. Signing the Contract – Be prepared to put down approximately 50% of the total cost of your kitchen. Every company has different guidelines that they follow, which you will most likely discuss with your designer ahead of time. Be sure to read the contract thoroughly and ask how long it will take for the cabinets to arrive and what their delivery policy is.
