How to Pick a Digital Camera That is Right For You
Let´s start by thinking about why you want a digital camera in the first place and assume that your goal is not to become a professional photographer. Let´s assume you are planning on traveling and want to be able to take a lot of digital photos. You will probably want a digital camera you can learn quickly. You probably won´t need a lot of special features, but you will want the basics like a good zoom, flash and you will want something light and easy to carry.
How many megapixels will you need? The number of megapixels will depend on what you plan on doing with your photos. If you just plan on sending them via email and uploading to a photo sharing site, a lower number will work. For your basic 8 x 10 inch print, a 2 megapixel camera will work just fine. If you plan on doing a lot of printing and want a higher resolution, you might want to go with a higher number, like 3.5 to 5.
How about other considerations? If you will be taking a lot of shots while traveling, you will need a lot of memory. The camera itself will have a certain amount of memory, but you will also want one that has a slot for a memory card. Unless you plan on taking a laptop and downloading photos on to the laptop each day, you will want a number of memory cards. A 16 or 32 megabyte card will store a lot of photos. If you will not download, you may want several of these.
Accessories may be something to consider as well. A waterproof carrier that can also house a small tripod, extra batteries and your memory cards would be good to have, especially if you are taking day trips and can carry an extra small bag.
