It is very important to always us a well know anti-virus software program and scan your PC daily. The alternative may be finding your e-gold account was emptied out by a hacker. Suggested anti-virus programs: Grisoft, McAfee, Panda Software, Symantec.
Never click on links or forms you receive in unsolicited email or IM messages: This is generally known as phishing. Phishing is a form of criminal activity designed to steal your passphrase or other private financial information. The fake email you received is masquerading as a trusted person or financial institution. The linked malicious web site is designed to look like the legitimate web site in an effort to trick you into typing in your passphrase or download a virus. If the e-mail is requesting you to access your e-gold account via a hyperlink, that email is NOT from e-gold. E-gold never sends such email. Additionally, never type in your sensitive information on any emailed form and especially do not click on the hyperlinks contained in an unsolicited letter. In most cases just by visiting that linked malicious web your PC will pick up a virus.
The e-gold web has an detailed section on this threat.
Restrict access to your e-gold account using Account Sentinel: e-gold’s Account Sentinel™ (a.k.a. AccSent™) greatly enhances the security of your e-gold account by restricting who can access the account. Using AccSent, you can restrict browser access on your account to a single IP address or a range of IPs and also a single web browser.
This helpful addition, provides an extra layer of protection for your e-gold funds. In the event your passphrase is stolen the AccSent feature will assist in keeping the thief out of your account by adding some additional security features. You can access these features from inside your account and set the Web Browser Security Profile.
Always verify you are entering the actual e-gold web site before typing any private access information: Phishing and spoofed emails push users to visit a fake/fraudulent web. The fake web is a copy of the original and these sites will steal your account access as it is typed into the wrong form.
To verify you are at the authentic e-gold site and not a phishing web, always check for an active padlock (SSL) in the browser status bar (lower right corner area). Additionally, you should mouse over the padlock and it will tell you ‘Signed by VeriSign Trust Network’. Double click on it and the matching URL given in this certificate is always www.e-gold.com . Anything different is not the e-gold web site and you should avoid that fake web. Netcraft also offers a great Anti-phishing toolbar.
