Classic Championship Wrestling Event Wrap-up 8.29.06

As the doors were ready to open for CCW's weekly home date at the CCW Arena, the buzz from the parking lot to the locker rooms centered on one topic, the bracket for the inaugural CCW Heavyweight Championship Tournament, which would be announced during the show. As expected, the crowds continue to hit the sell-out mark week after week, and with the action going down in Portland the last couple of weeks, tonight was no exception.

Dynamite Derrick, who no doubt considers himself to be the top prospect to take the CCW title, hit ringside to a shower of jeers and boos as he prepared to try and keep his hot streak rolling against Jebidiah Blackhawk. While Blackhawk may be off to a rocky start since returning to Classic Championship Wrestling a few weeks ago, the ovation from the fans leave little room to argue the potential for impact from Blackhawk down the road.

Attacking from behind, Dynamite Derrick targeted the left knee of his opponent, grinding through the beginning of the match with a variety of leglocks and impact moves to even the field against Blackhawk, the bigger and stronger man in the match. While Blackhawk managed to buy a scrap of time here and there, the only word that could be used for Derrick's strategy was relentless. While a reversal of a figure four looked to be Blackhawk's best chance for getting back in to the match-up, a frustrated Derrick instead took the low road, snagging the ring bell from ringside, maybe not ready to win, but ready and more than willing to inflict more damage. As Derrick hit the ring, he was quickly joined by "Smooth" Johnny Spade, unsatisfied with last week's no-contest and hellbent for further payback. Staff from the back flooded the ring, and even with the sudden switch in the numbers game, they found it hard to keep the two apart.

This brought out CCW Commissioner Chris Alexander, whose patience, it seemed, had reached its breaking point with both Derrick and Spade. Threatening both men's status in the CCW Championship tournament, and following a suggestion from CCW Owner Marcus, Alexander informed them that if they wanted to fight, they would get their chance later in the evening...against two unnamed opponents...as a tag team! Talk about setting the gas can next to the campfire!

In-ring action then continued with Elmore Fudd (accompanied by Mrs. Elmore Fudd) versus Biff Wellington III. The Tappa Kappa Kegga member was greeted soundly in his return to singles action following a brief hiatus, although enough distraction was provided by Mrs. Fudd for her man to try and gain the edge at the start. Quickly recovering, BW3 ran Fudd from corner to corner and back again, even landing a couple of running shoot-style kicks, punctuated by BW3's "OLAY!!!" yell and dance. While he may have been out for a couple of weeks taking care of business, BW3 has obviously not lost the mood to have a little fun with the fans, as they thoroughly enjoyed this spot in the match. While the momentum was clearly in Wellington's favor at this point, Fudd was not down or out, not by any stretch of the imagination. A splash in the corner may have been telegraphed slightly by BW3, allowing Fudd to capitalize. Senior Official Darrell Mays once again found himself with his hands full, as Mrs. Fudd's presence at a match always leaves Fudd's opponents (and a few officials, as well) wishing they had a third eye in the back of their head.

After warning Mrs. Fudd about getting involved, Mays finally had enough and ejected her from ringside, much to the approval of the capacity crowd. Incredibly, she would then don a mask and return to ringside, only to wind up being ejected a second time. Fudd, looking good in the later half of the match, looked as though he could very well be on his way to sneaking out of the arena with another win, and that is exactly what happened, thanks once again to the efforts of his wife. As Wellington mounted the top rope to try and finish off Fudd, Mrs. Fudd ran back out, this time under the radar, to knock BW3 from the turnbuckle and set up the pinfall for her man. With the wins Fudd and wife have been racking up in the last few weeks, it's hard not to consider him a star to watch in the CCW title tournament, although CCW management needs to take a look at some form of disciplinary action for Mrs. Fudd, who ended the night just a hair shy of the hat trick for ringside ejections, something I don't think I have ever heard of in the 25 years I've been watching professional wrestling.

The next match of the evening found two CCW fan favorites, "The Black Redneck" Kliff Hanger and CCW Commissioner Chris Alexander meeting up in a friendly encounter. The match promised a clash between two exceptional mat technicians, and the promise was kept as both men put on a display of scientific grappling and reversals. The match was fast-paced and even matched for the duration, with Kliff Hanger emerging triumphant following a sunset flip. I feel confident going on record as predicting Kliff Hanger going to the Final Four in the CCW title tournament. A breakout showing from "The Black Redneck" is due any time now, in my opinion, and what better path than the one that leads to the CCW Heavyweight title?

Returning from the intermission, the crowd was greeted by the ever-present Tim the Baker who, while trading insults with not only the fans but the ringside photographer, announced he had a new tag team to debut. As "The Illustrious" K-Lo and Guido Andretti emerged from the locker room, the fans now knew the "mystery" opponents for the forced-together Dynamite Derrick and "Smooth" Johnny Spade. The tension between Derrick and Spade was immediate, as soon after clearing the ring, the two men went nose-to-nose in the center of the ring.

While they may have had the match in their favor in the early goings, extremely hard tags between the two only served to underscore the hostility threatening to tear the match apart at the seams. Obviously looking to soften up Spade for the future, Derrick did every thing he could to ignore tagging back into the match, leaving Spade to be dissected by K-Lo and Guido Andretti. In a further display of his arrogance, Derrick even left ringside, hitting the concession stand to grab a bottled water not only for himself, but the opposing team as well! After Spade managed to tag Derrick back into action, Derrick had no other choice but to crank up the offense, only to turn around and meet a waiting superkick from Spade, allowing Guido to score the pin. Using the aforementioned bottled water, Spade revived the unconscious Dynamite Derrick, leaving him in the ring as Spade returned to the back with a rousing applause from the crowd, having been on the losing side in the ring but scoring a big time moral victory over his nemesis. A collision between these two men in the Heavyweight Title tournament is highly likely, and any such match, especially considering the stakes, definitely has the potential to be a classic. Stay tuned, folks, this feud is only going to get better before it gets resolved.

The main event for the evening had nothing in store for the crowd but mayhem, as The Fat and The Furious teamed up with CCW prospect Brandon Scott in a rematch from last week's 6 man war, facing The H.N.I.C and The Prophet, only this time, it was in a "Portland Street Fight." Judging by the items employed in the match, one could swear the match was taking place in the aftermath of a tornado. In lieu of the kitchen sink, a selection of household doors was utilized, along with kendo sticks, chairs, and other assorted blunt objects. The match, a pier six brawl from the word go, often had fans in the first two rows scrambling as neither team showed mercy or restraint toward the other, as evidenced by an unbelievable off the top rope sit down powerbomb through a table, as delivered by Jack Black to JB Thunder. The only thing that kept the fans from breaking into a "CCW!" chant at that point may have been pure shock. The match ended with Brandon Scott, who scored big-time in his professional debut last week, racking up another upset win, pinning Apollo with a sunset flip in the middle of a pile of weapons Apollo himself had strewn into the ring. While Scott may be on a huge roll at the onset of his career, he may find himself in the position of marked man with both the H.N.I.C. and the Prophet, given the results of the past two shows. After the match, both teams continued to verbally spar, until the challenge was thrown down by Vito Andretti for a Bunkhouse Brawl match for next week, which was accepted and then set for next week by Marcus.

With the beginning of the CCW Championship tournament next week and now the Bunkhouse Brawl being added to the mix, the fans may be spending the Labor Day weekend working to keep up with the action in Classic Championship Wrestling, no short order given the talent and the intensity leading up to next week's big event.
