Career Offender Bank Robber Sentenced to 151 Months in Federal Prison

PORTLAND, OR—Johnathan Darrell Singleton, 43, Portland, Oregon, was sentenced on November 10, 2009, by U.S. District Judge Ancer L. Haggerty to serve 151 months in federal prison for bank robbery. Singleton was also ordered to serve a federal supervised release term of three years following his release from prison. Singleton´s criminal history includes four state convictions for robbery, and convictions for assault and burglary. Defendant pled guilty to one count of bank robbery on August 31, 2009.
On May 26, 2009, at about 9:30 a.m., Singleton entered the Northwest Resources Federal Credit Union on Northwest Second Avenue in Portland, Oregon and approached a bank teller. Singleton asked the bank teller for a business card and then stated, "I have a gun." Singleton told the bank teller that he wanted $20s, $50s, and $100s. Singleton also held his hand inside of his sweatshirt which gave the impression that he was holding a gun. The bank teller gave Singleton $4,840.00 and he fled from the credit union. Police, responding to the robbery call, were able to locate Singleton inside a taxi cab crossing the Broadway Bridge. Police then learned that Singleton was fleeing on foot down an embankment from Interstate 5 near the Rose Quarter and were able to arrest him. Police recovered $4,790.26 from Singleton´s pants pocket during the arrest.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation along with the Portland Police Bureau successfully investigated the case. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Fred W. Slaughter.
