It is always active at a basal level and becomes more active during times of stress. Once released, norepinephrine and epinephrine bind adrenergic receptors on peripheral tissues, which causes the effects seen during the fight-or-flight response. Physically, adrenaline begins pouring through your system, your digestion shuts down, your heart beats faster, your liver releases stored sugar into your bloodstream, you sweat, and your pupils dilate.


Panic attacks are frightening but fortunately physically harmless episodes. People experiencing panic attacks may fear they are dying, that they are suffocating, or that they are having a heart attack. Physical symptoms include palpitations, trembling, weak knees, dizziness, chest or stomach pains, pins and needles, nausea, muscle pains, diarrhea, breathlessness, feeling of unreality, weak bladder, visual disturbances, tension, dry mouth and throat, and sweating.
