On July 3, 2008, at about 3:00 p.m., Cooley entered the Sterling Savings bank located at 14638 SE Sunnyside Road in Portland and demanded money from two bank employees. When the bank employees asked Cooley if he was serious, Cooley lifted up his sweatshirt to expose what appeared to be a handgun in his waistband. The bank employees complied with Cooley´s demands and provided him with $3,182.00, which Cooley placed in a plastic bag. Cooley fled the bank in a green pickup and was spotted by law enforcement shortly thereafter. Cooley then led police on a high-speed chase resulting in Cooley driving on Interstate 205 though heavy holiday traffic. While on Interstate 205, Cooley threw a bag out of his truck from which police recovered the stolen bank money and an air pistol. Law enforcement arrested Cooley after he crashed his truck into other vehicles on Interstate 205 during the high-speed chase.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation along with the Clackamas County Sheriff´s Office successfully investigated the case. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Fred W. Slaughter.
