A quick and easy add-on feature used to customize your home is the addition of a ceiling dome. For tips on how to get started and what kind of time and expertise needed, just follow this easy check list:

Questions Before Starting

1. How big of a dome do you want (diameter of the circle)?

2. Do you want a circular ring, or an elongated (rectangular) dome?

3. What type of style do you prefer: soft rise or half-circle? (The style is the shape of the dome ceiling). Please note that one inhibiting factor that usually determines the style is your answer to this question. How much clearance do you have due to a 2nd floor or roof rafters.

Great! With these three questions answered you´re ready to build your dome ceiling. There are two different ways to build your dome ceiling. The first is to use plywood and traditional lumber. This entails scribing the rafters, cutting blocks, and building the rings from scratch. This is very time consuming and usually takes at a minimum a full day of labor for 2 experienced framers. However, the quickest, easiest, and most affordable way to install a dome is to get a nifty pre-manufactured kit from Archways and Ceilings Made Easy. Here are installation instructions step by step. Once you finish reading the steps, I would visit their site and watch how easy it is.

Installation

1. Using traditional framing construction to meet code requirements, frame a square box in your desired ceiling location. For a six foot diameter dome, frame in a square 72" x 72".

2. Frame a dome beam across the center of the dome. Depending on the light fixture

you plan on hanging from the apex of the dome, the span of the dome, or purlin

bracing, use the appropriate lumber. Set the dome beam to the appropriate height above your square box.

3. Measure and mark the center point on the side of the dome beam.

4. Secure the square wood tie to the center of the dome beam and measure and mark the center lines of the box on all four sides.

5. Measure and mark the angle block placement and nail in the corners of the 2x6 square box.

6. Nail each section of the circular ring in place.

7. Nail in the rafters from the top of the ring to the matching spot on the square wood tie.

You´re done. Experienced framers have installed 6 foot diameter dome rings (with the framing box already in place) in less than ten minutes! Quick—Easy--Affordable. Now that you have read how to install, you click here and watch how quick and easy it is to install a ceiling dome.
