Overview Of Houston Community College System

Michael Russell
The Houston Community College System is made up of seven community colleges within the Houston, Texas area working together to make sure that every student attending the college is given the tools that they needs to succeed.

The colleges work collaboratively to design curricula that meet the needs of the diverse population of students who attend. The entrance standards for the colleges are very lenient so that students who may have difficulty in an area are able to take courses to help them reach the college academic level they need in order to attain their certification or degree.

There are many different types of education taught through the Houston Community College System. Individuals can attend the distance learning program and receive college credits towards their degree. There are ESL classes for students who may need to become more proficient with the English language to be successful. Adults wishing to complete high school will find classes available to meet this objective and prepare them to proceed through the Community College System.

The questionnaire that each individual wishing to attend HCCS complete helps the person to identify their major, decide if they want to work towards a higher education degree, or enter the workforce. Whichever choice an individual makes there is a specific program designed to meet their needs.

For students wishing to use their education to enter the workforce immediately the college has designed programs that meet those needs. These job training programs offer students courses that provide them with college credit as well as job training. For many students this unique programs gives them an opportunity before committing to decide that they want to do something differently.

Programs designed for students leaving high school and entering the college environment for the first time are found in the College Connection. This center helps young high school students gain the maturity and knowledge that they need to succeed in college. They are also prepared for higher education that will follow their community college experience.

Houston Community College System also provides an ongoing education program that provides training and workshops for individuals who wish to learn a new skill or enhance a skill set that they may already have. The program also offers training for people who may be transitioning from one career to another.

Through the collaboration of the seven colleges that comprise the Houston Community College System and private sponsors there are several scholarships programs available for students. Unlike many colleges many of the scholarships are broad based and do not have a residential requirement to meet qualification for funding.
