Ros-Lehtinen Commends Law Library of Congress for Standing Firm against Political Pressure

Congressional Desk
(WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on the decision by the Law Library of Congress to stand by its original findings in an August 2009 report regarding Honduras despite requests made by Congressional Members to revise the report´s findings. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"If the Law Library of Congress was to succumb to political pressures, it would cast a permanent shroud of doubt on its position as an objective and credible research service.

"I am pleased that the Law Library has stood by its independent analysis and has provided further evidence to demonstrate the intricate legal review conducted by its experts to reach the conclusion that Manuel Zelaya's removal from office was constitutional and according to Honduran rule of law.

"The institutional independence and impartiality of this historic institution cannot afford to be tainted by individual Member views or prejudice."

This week, Ros-Lehtinen sent a letter to the Librarian of Congress supporting the institutional independence and impartiality of the Law Library of Congress. The letter was sent in response to a request from Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA) that the Law Library of Congress withdraw and "correct" its August report on Honduran constitutional issues. Ros-Lehtinen was joined by 15 Republican colleagues in this letter.
