Xbox 360 - One Of The Simplest Causes For The Three Red Light Error

Marc Sandford
Are you getting the 3 red light error otherwise known as the ring of death? If this is the case, don't assume right off that you have a damaged console. You may be having difficulties with getting adequate electrical power to your xbox.

This problem is very easy to deal with and you ought to rule this out before any attempt at repair is made. Excessive heat is the usual reason for the ring of death. But unless it is very obvious that you have a heat problem, you should check that the console is getting the required power.

First, you should begin with the power outlet in the wall. You could have had a temporary power brownout. This is guaranteed to cause your console to fail.

If such is the case, the console will function after turning it off and then back on. If not, take a look at the power supply light located on the box on the power cord.

If there's a green light, you have plenty of power so your problem is something else. If so, there's little point to reading the rest of this article because I will only talk of power related issues.

If you see a red or orange light or no light at all, then you're not getting the needed power. There's several reasons:

1.) The wall outlet in your room is to blame.

Connect the power supply of the console into a different outlet in another room.

2.) You have a bad surge protector or power strip.

Bypass any surge protectors or power strips by connecting the console power supply directly into the wall.

3.) The power supply cables to the console are loosely connected.

Disconnect and reconnect all power cable connections beginning with the console and then proceeding to the wall outlet.

4.) The power supply cables have a defect or have been damaged.

Replace all cables that have been damaged.

5.) Your power brick is getting too hot.

The power brick is not getting enough air for cooling. Keep it on a solid surface or hang it from a hook.

6.) Your power brick is defective.

Borrow a power brick from your friend or try a spare. If the problem goes away, then your original power brick was faulty.

This article presented a trouble shooting procedure for the red ring of death that's due to insufficient power supply. Hopefully this will solve your problem because the other reasons for the ring of death will not be so easy to fix.
