Over the past two decades recreational angling adventures have become much more inclusive in their offerings. It is now becoming increasingly apparent that West Coast salmon fishing is not an exclusive boy´s club anymore.

More and more ladies are joining their significant others on their annual salmon fishing get away. Lodges and operators are adapting their programs to make their respective offerings more ladies friendly. This doesn´t mean "prettying things up". In my career, on the west coast as a salmon guide and ultimately as president of the largest remote angling operations in British Columbia, I have met some very dedicated and capable female anglers. Rain, shine, wind or hail could not keep these angling goddesses off the water.

What really has changed is that lodges and charter operators are now welcoming female participation in the sport through advertising. Couples fishing getaways and inclusive family orientated angling weekends are now becoming common offerings at west coast salmon fishing lodges. Some lodges are actually blocking out full trips in their seasonal schedule that are dedicated as "Ladies only" (I have hosted a few on these trips and I can assure you they are as much fun as they are competitive)

For the most part the adjustments that west coast salmon fishing resorts have to make to change the perception that they cater to an exclusive boy´s club are minor though extremely important. Men and women, though equal in angling ability, tend to have different standards in privacy expectations. It is imperative that lodges create an environment that meets the privacy and personal safety concerns of lady anglers (private wash and change rooms come to mind).

As for manners and common courtesy I think we can all agree that first and foremost we should always treat one another with respect. I am positive that rude, loud, demanding and disrespectful guests are frowned upon by men and women equally. Lodge owners owe it to all their clientele to keep this type of uncouth lout in check and provide an enjoyable relaxing experience for all.

So if you didn´t know it before you do now- west coast salmon fishing is not an exclusive boy´s club. Ladies and families are welcome to come and enjoy a truly memorable and unique experience at one these beautiful and unique west coast resorts.
