Repairing Your Xbox 360 Yourself - 3 Important Considerations

Marc Sandford
You're in the middle of a Grand Theft Auto game and your Xbox freezes. Three red lights are flashing on the front of the console. You switch the power off and on a few times and you know that this problem's not going away by itself.

You've got a number of options. Send the console back to Microsoft and have it repaired free of charge provided that your warranty is still good. If you don't have a valid warranty anymore, you have to pay up to $150 to Microsoft to get your console repaired.

You can also do the repair job by yourself but is this a wise thing to do? This will depend on several factors:

1.) Do you have a valid warranty and do you really want to use it?

This is most definitely a crucial consideration. It would be easy to let Microsoft fix the problem and have it repaired without any sweat on your part.

But many people have had to wait several weeks before receiving their console only to get the ring of death again after some weeks of usage. Sometimes people got refurbished consoles that used to belong to someone else! You don't know what sort of mistreatment the console has been through.

2.) Do you have any problems about using tools to fix something?

It's very common for people to have never fixed a flat on a bicycle. If you have used the basic tools such as a socket wrench, a knife, screw driver, etc. Then you're qualified to repair your console.

If you've never picked up and used these basic tools, then Xbox self repair is not for you. Remember that when fixing your console, be very careful.

3.) How good is your repair guide?

How do you know for certain that the kid on Youtube actually knows his stuff? He's just a kid who likes to mess around inside the console. Is there a follow up video about how long his Xbox worked after the "repair"?

It often saves time and money to purchase a guide that contains information that can be relied on. The person selling the guide has his customers to answer to. The Youtube kid answers to no one.

With the right guide you can repair your console within a few hours. Just like repairing a bike, your repair experience with your Xbox goes a long way.
